Can't you just host a password protected game on battle.net and tell all your friends the code, keeping all the cannon fodder out but allowing your buddies in? I mean it isn't LAN but it will let you play SC2 with your friends and no one else

The update pretty much put the final nail in the coffin for StarCraft 2 LAN parties. Will they still allow spawned installs?

EDIT:

Well, you could, but why go through all that when the guy you're playing against is literally just five feet away from you? That, and the issue of lag. That said, the new Battle.net should be a very good platform if the decision to not include LAN play pushes through. I guarantee you, there will be an angry mob armed with pitchforks and torches if the new Battle.net doesn't deliver.

Well that's a slap in the face of fans; didn't this thing get super-popular because of its presence at LAN parties? I was already on the fence about it with that "3 versions to buy" crap, but that bit 'o news just shoved me into the "do not want" category.

Hmm, I think I saw this already somwhere. Oh yes...

The other game that had LAN ability removed to force players to play subscription for multiplayer was the product of the other half of Blizzard, Flagship studios. This is since known as The Flagship Maneuver a.k.a. dickmove!

Look how that turned out...

I fear, that Blizzard will do the same, and no matter how many angry emails, rabid fans braking forums and petitions they get, they won't move an inch, and continue to force this shovelfull of shit down our throats. "You want to play with your friends in a multiplayer game? Well, FUCK YOU! Pony up the cash, and then you can maybe, just maybe, join a buggy, laggy server full of retards! Have a nice day!"

No, Blizzard, you were the last game developer company I trusted... until now. Shame on you...

so we're encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II.
I'm not sure that's the right...I just think there's a much more appropriate word you could be using at this point: forcing.

I find this really kind of worrying. If Battle.net is really as good as they say it is going to be, they shouldn't need to remove alternatives, people will just use Battle.net anyway, because it'll be better than LAN. Why do they feel the need to actually remove options? Not only is LAN no longer an option, but it sounds suspiciously like Battle.net is no longer a credible option either.

"advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking..."

Well no matter how advanced the communication it will never beat out Room Speak, and I could care less about achievements and/or stat-tracking. Seriously let me play the freaking game at a LAN party.

Can't wait to see the achievements for this game though DING DONG You killed 20 Zerg YAAAAY!

What is a Spawn install?
Ah to be young again.

I loved the spawn installs. Starcraft, Diablo 2, and I think even Total Annihilation all had 'em.
What a great concept.
You didn't explain what is was. I've been playing Starcraft since I came out, and I've never heard of them.
Basically a Spawn Install was a smaller multiplayer only install that didn't require the CD to launch.
So one person could bring his StarCraft copy along, he installs a spawn on his friends PCs and they could all play LAN games together, with only a single disc between them.

It was an awesome way to introduce friends to the game, since you only needed 1 copy for an entire party.

Not that we needed another excuse to stop giving Blizzard money. LOL you ever wanna make yourself sick think about the "11 million" monthly WOW subscribers, multiply that by monthly rates. Doesn't matter though cause the number you're gonna come up with multiplied by the time the game has been live is ridiculous.8)

Sad. Blizzard has been cashing in some ungodly amount of money since they hit the ten million barrier. Where did that eleventy bazillion dollars go? Gold encrusted diamond toilet seats? For gods sake! They have the money to virutally buy every single game company on Earth, and they are trying to strangle the faithful fans, who stood by the company for fucking ages? Just to squeeze out the last pennies?

I never imagined Blizzard turning into an EA style money-whore, but it seems like nothing is impossible anymore...

Well I wont be getting SC2 than, I played SC1 on LAN 20x more than I ever did online, if it dont include LAN than I aint getting it. The Spawn install idea was great, what a bunch of twats to drop it, if their that dumb I doubt the game will be any good anyway.

My friends and I play Starcraft on Battlenet, because none of us want to haul our boxes to each other's houses...
You can still play on LAN with each other without having the computers under the same house. You just need someone to host and tell his IP to everyone else so they can join.

If it can ONLY connect through Battle.net and no TCP/IP direct connecting stuff at all, it's an anti piracy measure no matter what they say is the reason. Probably a good idea.
