Okay. In one corner we have:

Verizon:
1-3Mbits
DSL
Good price

In this corner we have:

Time Warner:
1 Up
10 Down
Cable
Good price

My question:

I slightly understand the physics of any online gaming:

Player moves around world (Information sent to server)
Other players move around world (Server sends Info)
Player interacts with world (Info sent)
World/Other players interact with you (Server sends)

SO, with that logic, I would Lag relatively the same with either provider? (Starting to sound more like a Sanity Check then anything else)

I'm assuming the only relief I would notice is when others in my household use the internet while I'm using, assuming as well that they are downloading/streaming, That I will be more likely to not notice a large dent in my bandwidth...

Help me out if ya can.

I haven't tried Verizon DSL since A) they are an evil corporation and B) they can't operate here since it's against the law for them to compete with ATT. But I used to have time warner before Comcast got here and I liked it well enough. But avoid Comcast like the plague if they get to your area.

EDIT: Of course I forgot about the hard facts. DSL is faster the closer to the DSL tower you are while Cable internet is shared with your neighborhood. If enough cable customers are online, it will affect your speed.

I live in the middle of nowhere, so the cable aspect wouldn't be much of a problem.

Thanks for the input!

If it's the middle of nowhere, you're probably far from the DSL tower, so I would go with cable. Besides, that gets you away from Verizon...

Heh. Time Warner. Yeah, have fun calling customer service when they decide to put you on the wait list for their services.

They do have some nice services and neat things to tinker with. That is, when they're WORKING properly.

The thing to know about cable is to understand that your quality of connection is dependent on the number of people in your area. So in your case it sounds like cable would be a vast improvement over DSL due to the lack of population and chance that people in your area are going to be using the bandwidth of cable. So if no one is in your area you will have low lat and that means low lag. The exception is if you decide to upload anything because the sending and receiving is through the same cable.

However be mindful that Time Warner does maintenance which at times will affect your connection but normally they are at night so will have little effect and no sales person or installation crew will be able to tell you this.

If there is anything I would make sure is if you are tech savvy to try and make sure you are just paying for the most basic of equipment and don't buy all the extra hardware that they want to sell you. This does apply to any telecom company but the more equipment you own the better because it means a cheaper monthly bill and if anything goes wrong it prevents you from having to call them for tech support which means less reliance on your provider.
Noted. The only thing we ever use, is of course, their modem. Everything else, is our own.

As for Uploading, besides sending packets to servers via web-pages, games, and the occasional homework assignment; sounds like we'll be sitting pretty.

Thanks!
