If you buy the cheaper "Upgrade" version of an OS such as Windows, do you have to install the older OS each time before installing the newer OS, or can you install the new OS directly? If the latter, how do you prove that you have the older version? Does installing one OS over an older one slow down computer performance?

Also, can a laptop change OS's? Or do the drivers provided only work with the OS it was packaged with.

Technically, you can upgrade an upgrade version.... (only with vista)

I would always recommend starting with a clean install and not an upgrade install. It also forces you to stay in the habit of backing up your files regularly.
Thats a good thing though... :p

But do the cheaper upgrade versions of Windows OS's allow clean installs?

Supposedly, your able to install with windows vista, the clean install.
But you only have a KEY for upgrade.
So your able to upgrade the clean install, with your ugprade version.

Oddly enough I believe it was at escapist they had the article about it, that MS isn't really saying they don't want people to do it... It 'may' have been intentional, who knows. (easier to ship 1 type of disk, and only contain a key for 1 type of the product. :p)

XP you can't do that. win7 I'm doubting they'll make the same mistake twice...

And even if you upgrade, its still a damned good practice to backup files...
With Win7/vistas upgrading though, I don't see how its much of an issue, I find there upgrade process to be awesome!
(and malicious spyware you may have had, won't really affect you, since they would be trying to affect the windows folder in the windows.old folder.. (Possibly... depends if there spyware was written to include the possibilty of upgraded or not... unlikely though... they are tryign to hit the most # of people, not just a few....)

Its cheaper in the long run to get a full version and do a clean install. Someone had come into my geek squad location on 2 occasions to get XP upgraded to Vista Home Premium, and then they came in a month later because they needed business/ultimate so they could connect to domains.

dude ended up spending about 500 dollars on upgrade editions and installs(because most people are apparently too incompetent to google)
