I think it gives motivation to keep playing. It's like an unlockable. Unlockables give the player incentive to carry on playing to see what they're going to get next. I like the idea of upgrades in FPS games.

I miss the days where I would play games for ages, doing side missions and things like that, to actually get something new to play with within the game. Nowadays it's mostly just so you can get an achievement or trophy just for bragging rights. Ugh. >.<

I hate achievements... they're addictive. When I got to around 7500 on my gamerscore, I spent two days gaming constantly near enough to get it upto the 9000's. XD

Unlockables in multiplayer are fun to get, but unlockable weapons in campaign or single player games is not that great. I'm not that much of a fan of upgrades (as in damage, firing rate, etc) but I like attachments.

I myself just love this option in games.
But then again, I'm an avid RPG fan. Really awesome weapons make a game truely fun (See the ones in Resistance: FOM on PS3). The game itself was lacking, but the fun stuff with the weapons made the experience great none the less.

And what's better than a great weapon? The same one only stronger ;)
It can evolve gameplay, or at least make your killing easier/funnier.

Also a game that had awesome weapons and ditto upgrades: Painkiller.

And the first FPS-es had very funny and original weapons as well. I'm thinking of Blood, Red Neck Rampage etc.

I really enjoyed it in Wolfenstein, so I'd like to see it in more game, yeah.

Some games do well with RPG elements, but not all games need it.
Agreed. I find that RPG elements often make the game much more fun for me..but being an RPG fan helps too.. Anyway, I'm all for upgrades such as silencers and scopes, not so much for "upgrades." To me that adds a totally unrealistic factor and breaks immersion, more so when playing multiplayer than single player. That said, I love the ability to engineer a gear set-up that is focused on certain areas of gameplay; one example being stopping power in COD4.

I like upgrades, just so long as they are more fun than game altering.
See, I feel the opposite. I enjoy upgrades that let me play the game differently. Like Mass Effect, playing the game as different classes cater to different playstyles, and the replay value of that game was multiplied for me.
But Mass effect isn't an FPS...

In Mass effect, I admit it was a good thing.
Lol it wasn't even in FIRST PERSON.

Gotta go with a game by game basis. Some just do it better than others.

It depends. In Dead Space and Bioshock it was ok (not great but not horrible either).

Deus Ex had good upgrading. So did the 'Shocks. The rest of them were big fat piles of suck.
They're ARPGs though...

I think they add depth. Depending on the game I like the idea of them being there.
