so, its getting more and more pressing to upgrade my OS, but money is quite tight for me... (unemployed, and already had to lay out £150 due to hardware failures from my PC just getting old). My first choice is windows 7, but at £70, its a bit too pricey right now. Are there alternatives, or way to snag it for a lower price?

Not really I'm afraid. I couldn't recommend Vista, and OS prices are pretty fixed. Could you optimize your system (clean out old programs, Cclean and Malwarebytes everything, cleanse your boot programs and services) and hopefully the improvements would allow you to remain on XP for now?

Why do you need to upgrade now? Is it for gaming? If so, and the games in question are on Linux, you could try setting Linux in a partition on your current system.

Sorry, can't really be much more help than that.

Well there are at least cheaper ways to get a genuine product key such as here [http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201110913664] for Windows 7 or here [http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151454449809] for 8.1, which will apparently be upgradable to 10 for free. Windows 8 is a better choice even if you feel compelled to install a start menu modification. It's faster, will have longer support and a free upgrade to 10.

More just aware its no longer being supported, and seeing the odd game here and there move on to vista + , leaving XP behind. Also, the main online game I play had a major update friday, which broke the game for me, and a number of the things I've been asked to try by the tech support peeps are things I can't do because I'm on XP.
