I mean, that's the fascinating thing about that brand of the right wing. They love a certain amount of mutual support and joint purpose, but at the end of the day they are nationalists. Whilst its nice to have bonds of convenience between nationalists of different states when the main aim is winning elections against the hated liberal-left, once they gain power they're all about screwing over other countries, and next thing you know they're all at each other's throats.
In Canada, the provincial parties tend to be independent from the national ones. The Federal Conservatives like to portray the Canadian economy as weak so the Liberals look bad. Ford on the other hand is portraying the economy as good because it makes him loot better with Ontario voters. So now Ford is going into the election looking like someone who will fight for Ontario and will stand up to the new Axis of Evil.

If a 10th of what people think is in there is actually in there, the US is fucked

So far, it's already way past 10% and we are two weeks in
No, it's not, please stop with the hyperbole...

So Trump- who criticized Biden for "playing favorites in the market"- is floating the idea of having the government outright buy a company. For what? What strategic purpose does this serve for the country? Is it going to do more for us than USAID did?

Oh yeah, by the way, actual President of the United States Elon Musk wants USAID shut down, calling it a "criminal organization".

Wouldn't it be a good idea for the government to buy a social media company since social media is the new "public square" and it should be a public good, and then the 1st amendment could apply to the platform so there's no censorship?

If a company is crippled by the government, the company is all but valueless and the shareholders lose their money. Therefore, a threat to cripple the company may cause the shareholders to sell because it's the only way they're getting their money back.

Or, they could agree to lose the money and terminate the company as a great big "Fuck you" to the country that stole their business. But generally, investors want their money back.
Okay, but the majority of people using the company aren't under that government. Like porn sites not caving to certain states

Project 2025 in full swing

imagine being one of the dullards who believed/lied that Trump and project 2025 were completely separate and that Trump even disliked it.

of course no one really believed it. Everyone knew Trump would stick to that plan, and the US still deliberately voted for it.

I hope they’re proud of themselves

Might be worth copying and pasting quotes of such to not allow them forget it.

Sure, but getting locked out of a market would likely have an impact on company value roughly proportional to the share that country contributes to the company's revenue. The USA is an extremely large market, so its inaccessibility could massively damage the value of TikTok.

Maybe I'm too Montanan for this, but how does the government get around to buying a multi-national tech company that doesn't want to be sold?
Technically the TikTok ban could be re-enforced, and since it's a ban on social media owned by a foreign adversary selling to Trump would resolve the issue.

If Trump really wants US gov to own some social media, they should just host the full suite of Fediverse apps. I'm not even kidding about this - I genuinely think having US.Gov Mastodon/PeerTube/PixelFed instances at the very least would be useful. Defederate from no one, assign accounts to federal offices and then use those for official social media communications. [email protected] is official communications from whichever office, and everyone on another instance of any of those already has access to see your feeds, and all without government public communications being subject to the whims of a tech oligarch (that last bit being why it won't happen).

Could even hypothetically spin up two instances of each, with the second being for public use to have social media that is legitimately a "public square" of sorts and subject to 1A.

I totally believe a bunch of people are dumb or uninformed enough to not realize it though, because I've met several who voted for him.

If he'd actually frozen grants when it was threatened I'd be hearing about how massive Medicaid cuts were somehow Biden's fault.

Our Governor actually had a meeting with state Medicaid when he first announced the freezing grants thing because Medicaid grant disbursement was just a few days away and federal Medicaid grants pay for a majority of our Medicaid budget and he was worried about how to keep state Medicaid afloat with the funding pulled out from under it. And let's be fair, we're poor enough as a state that Mediciad being fucked on Trump and Morrisey's watch would have basically guaranteed he was a single term governor.

Seems fine. What could possibly go wrong.

Speaking of conflicts of interest

Ah, so this is how they're improving government transparency.

This one's just funny.

Unfortunately, none of this is hyperbole. You can maybe quibble a few percent.

I'm pretty sure China already thought of that

An American platform such as this would not know what the term free speech means

It is very much hyperbole.

It wouldn't be able to be censored due to the 1st amendment, which is probably the strongest and most all-encompassing free speech law in the world. Tim Walz didn't know what the term free speech means and you wanted me to vote for that guy?
