Right, so prior to this merger, the INS would have been doing this.
We are specifically talking about ICE here. I have no idea why you're bringing up Not-ICE in this discussion about Democrats wanting to keep ICE around but just make it so they can't be masked...
I'm talking about it because the function will still be performed, regardless of what name you give it. Even if you clear out everyone that works in it - which is notoriously difficult to do with civil servants - the remit of whatever replaces it will be the same. They will be a law enforcement arm with the purpose of enforcing Customs or Immigration compliance. The way the comport themselves - as a bunch of wannabe special forces - is at minimum embarrassing and at worst like a bunch of drunken violent rednecks who should have long been stripped of their position and prosecuted.
But it is not going away and will continue to exist long after you and I are dead.
Well we can't get rid of immigration enforcement period so we might as well just keep The Gestapo Arm of it!
Er, yes and no. Yes, in that INS did exist and would indeed round up illegal aliens to deport them (there's even a scene of this happening in Cheech & Chongs Up in Smoke from 1978), however the modern incarnation was established in 02-03 in response to 9/11 and the War on Terror and not only given much broader powers and basically militarized but was allowed given much more free reign to operate inside the greater US (allowing to treat areas around airports as 'the US border', and the various checkpoints set up on interstates near the border).
Getting rid of ICE and starting anew would result in a lot of the small problems coming over, but maybe not all of them. ICE has gotten worse over time, and of course really bad recently.
Though, not going to happen, even when ICE was younger and less evil the calls for it to be abolished were ignored.
(As an aside, don't think it still is, but ICE used to be set on using the Steyr AUG as it's standard rifle. Not a US weapon, one from, all of places, Austria)

I agree with all of this. ICE is unsalvageable and worthy of being abolished.
Do you not agree that ICE officers should not be allowed to wear masks & must have visible ID? To be clear, that's what the "masks are coming off" comment referred to; it was specifically about banning the use of masks to hide ICE officers' identities. I also think those masks should be banned. I assumed you would too.

I am well aware of what she was saying, which is why I said what I said. She still wants ICE to exist, she just wants to make them not wear masks while they do their thing. She wants to keep the Gestapo arm of immigration enforcement as long as Democrats get to be the ones using it.

I don't think ICE should exist. And no other law enforcement body should be able to obscure their identities in that manner.

Not seen the footage, but apparently it's making the rounds. A MAGA type went to hassle the protestors, and when chasing lefties, fell over, got up, chased them some more, and fell over again apparently injuring himself rather badly the second time. While is a perfect metaphor for certain things.
Because it's a stupid fucking question that has nothing to do with anything I've said but sure, to answer your question, they should not be allowed to mask and they should be required to have identification (and an actual warrant just like any other law enforcement requires).
They also shouldn't be allowed to mask because they shouldn't exist. And once again, my problem with what The Democrat said is my problem with Democrats period; they don't want to get rid of all the powers and abuses that Trump uses on us, they want to be the ones IN CONTROL OF IT (and since it's a Blue Rubber Stamp on the Gestapo Papers, y'all will go to brunch and ignore it instead of protesting it).

I live in the UK. Where I've protested a fair bit personally, and been subject to oppressive measures by law enforcement.
But consider this: most protesters against ICE, even #AbolishICE, are not going to be third-party voters. The numbers alone tell us this.

It was probably actually a left-wing person posing as a MAGA type to make them look bad. We weren't there, we don't know, and even if the media says otherwise, we all know that the left side is always lying in the media, unlike those always honest MAGA types.

You agree that The Gestapo shouldn't have masks. Great, wonderful, that wasn't the point of my post. The point of my post is Democrats still want The Gestapo to be around doing their thing, they just want to be the ones in charge of it. THAT is my problem with her statement.
