It's the only card they have to play right now to put pressure on Iran short of putting troops on the ground.

Right now American allies can't get oil through the strait, but Iran's allies like China can. Iran has money and regional power as long as they have full control of the strait. The US can take that away from them by closing the strait completely instead of a partial closure like what Iran currently has going on.

This will make the global problem even worse, but it puts a little bit of power back into the US's hands as China now has a reason to put pressure on Iran.

I think it's a miscalculation though, because Iran is much more willing to cause world-wide economic devastation than the US is, and they know it.

Trump doesn't have any idea about how to get out of this though, and it's a stupid war to begin with, so now he's just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks, and it's making him look weak and ridiculous.

Yes and no.

Iran's base strategy is to deny access. It's letting a handful through, but in practice this is a trivial amount. Nor does it necessarily benefit those countries receiving the oil exclusively. The oil price is set by global supply and demand, so it likely just shifts the global supply and demand a tiny bit for everyone. The income for Iran is likewise tiny. So Iran setting up a tollbooth looks to me more like Iran cocking a snook at the USA than a serious tactic for money or oil supply to its allies.

Therefore I don't think Iran's going to care that much, or make much difference to the bigger picture, if the USA blocks it fully. Inasmuch as its a card, it's the war's feeblest card thus far. Albeit a better card than ground invasion (!) or war crimes (!!).

However, it can be presented to the US public as their government doing something seemingly strong to pressure Iran, mostly I suspect to let the clock tick by a while until a new negotiation round.
