so yeah i gotta say it. COLLECTIBLES ARE REALLY USELESS!!! I mean what is even the point outside of lenghtening the game? What do sonics rings do? I don't know! what do coins/stars do for Mario? I don't know! Spider-tokens, comic book covers, pigeons, letters, bananas, light orbs, muse keys, urns, gold pieces, cog tags, skulls, etc. outside of the rarely worth it bonus features, extra lives, and acheivements. What's the point? what do you guys think

It's something to do. I like random achievments that pop up when I'm playing without me trying to get them, it's a nice little surprise.

If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to do it. Yeah it's pointless, but the same can be said about all of gaming.

Some people like it, and I am one of them depending on the game.

You kinda just said all of them right there.
but why, there's no point to it all bonus features are 99% of the time useless, the extra lives thing has all but vanished from the gaming world, and achievements while fun to get sometimes are all so inane, and why do they pick the collectibles they do, anyone hear an explaination for rings, or coins?

Well, rings were used as Sonic's health and, while you lost all of them in one hit, having more would increase the chances of picking them back up.

Coins restored health in 3D mario games.

Generally everything we do is pointless, we are just a bees fart in the great universe time line. Achievements and collectibles add extra things to do in games though I don't do them if there is no reward.

There's a feeling of satisfaction to be had upon achieving 100% in a game. It's tedious and may seem pointless, but it gives a nice feeling of accomplishment. If you don't find that, nobody's forcing you to collect them.

Sonic makes rings magic. He uses rings as like a replacement jutsu from Naruto. You're shooting a missile at Sonic, and all of a sudden POOF! He vanishes and in his place is a treasure box of apparently indestructible gold rings. Then Sonic reappears and tries to grab a couple of his rings so that he can do it again.

Also: I know what games all the collectible items are from except for Urns and Muse keys. Do share.

Because it's fun. Oh why is it fun? I have no idea how to explain that to you.

Basically all games are a long series of getting collectibles and overcoming objectives(which is a different version of the same idea). So if that's pointless then all game are pointless. But in a larger context, in real life you spend most of your time trying to get stuff(collectibles like a house, a car, etc.), earn achievements(got a job, graduate, retire, have kids, etc.), and overcome obstacles to attain objectives(get to work, write a paper, finish a project). I guess if you find collectibles boring then life must also find life boring boring because it is only an elaborate collectible hunt. How sad for you.

As for me, I find it fun to try and collect eveything in game. It makes me feel warn and fuzzy on the inside.

I like to look at my friends list and take satisfaction that my gamer score, therefore xbox live penis, is larger than theirs. Then I see others with higher gamer scores and weep for their non-existent lives.

Yes, I'm aware of the hypocrisy.

Yea, that's reason enough. Bonus features, cheats, and gamerscore are awesome, that's why people collect them, that's why they're there.

Clearly you haven't played Crackdown, those agility orbs were addictive.
Side note: Skills for kills agent, skills for kills.

What's the point of gaming to begin with? Entertainment. More stuff to do = More entertainment.

You want a useless in game collectible? If I'm not mistaken, you could get a tissue in Final Fantasy 7 that had no purpose other than having a tissue in your inventory. You couldn't use it, it wasn't vital to the plot nor was it needed for any side quests, it was just a tissue. You know, for your issues. It can be considered a collectible because you could get more of them if you really wanted to (though I can't remember for the life of me how).

Oh, and don't forget those yellow bags in Mirror's Edge. All they do is unlock *gasp* more useless Xbox gamer points! Seriously, not even some concept art of the visually stunning game? I felt so used, picking up all those empty bags.

Fallout's Elvis painting anyone? (It's in 1 and 2 I believe.)
completely useless and practically worthless. It's pretty heavy too, so after a while you just get annoyed with the thing and dump it on the ground somewhere. Though you could chuck it in the back of your car in F2. (And on a lesser note the Red Ryder BB-gun, which was hard to get and absolutely crap-tastic.)

Lance:
I had that tissue. Doesn't it automatically drop out of one of the machines in the entertainment district? (The bit where you dress up as a girl.)
