useless UN

just reading some posts and such on BBC's site. and Iv known this for years but it still boggles me. WHY is the UN so worthless? they are just like a bigger version of the league of nations. UN peacekeepers are a joke. and UN relief teams barely do anything, and the AU and EU are only slightly more valuable than the UN as well. It boggles me that they send in "peacekeepers" to "help" but they cannot do anything, they do not keep peace because they are not allowed to fight.

Well, the EU is far from useless (though not the most efficient body ever), but the UN was set up to prevent things like WWII from happening again, not go around and be up in everyone's business.

Your right but the thing about peacekeepers is because they give the leaders peace of mind that they are doing something good without actually doing something good, thus the term was coined "Peacekeeper"....peace of mine thats it!

Of course they're useless. They have no legitimate military, therefore their power is laughable at best. They really are just a larger LoN. The only thing the UN actually does is essentially force political contact between countries that hate each other.

It isn't their fault, they try their best but are limited on what they can do. Are you really criticizing a peace keeping organization despite their best efforts? Soldiers are dying in the Middle East in an attempt to keep peace, they are doing nothing, you plan on criticizing them?

Which is exactly HOW they prevent another World War 2 style event from happening. It gives teh world a public place to air their grievances and hopefully other nations will step up and try to mediate. Or, it could end up causing another World War 1 style event where a bunch of people gang up on another bunch of people... See the other side, or am I just bored...?

I know the other side. I'm not saying the UN should be abolished; far from it. But it is nearly useless, especially considering the grand plan that uh... I think it was Wilson had. It's not even the UN's fault that it's useless. It's the fact that people refuse to agree on the simplest things.

yes but also thousands are dying in sudan in darfur and Somalia where aid is desperately needed. there are thousands of peacekeepers, UN and AU alike, yet they cannot do anything. UN "troops are never allowed to fire unless one of their buildings comes under direct and constant attack. so until then, civilians can be rounded up and mass murdered infront of a peacekeeper base and they are unable to do anything.

no point in having it in the first place if it has so little power that it cannot do anything.

they should revamp it to allow peacekeeping forces to attack on sight and conduct missions and such. IMO.

Well then we'll have the "Bridges not bombs" committee shitting themselves. Humans need to learn how to agree and live for the swarm.

The UN is just where all the leaders come to have a chat.

It isn't supposed to have power.

It's members do have power if they can agree on something. Saying the UN is useless is saying diplomacy is useless.
