Do you join user groups? What do people think the purpose of them is/should be?

I don't join user groups. I guess I've been put off them by the group joining fad Facebook is going through (for now(I hope)).

I'm heavily into User Groups... I think that about one-fifth to one-fourth of my post count is because of them.

I've never been specifically interested in them. The Asylum Open Mic ocassionaly has some fun stuff but generally I'm completely apathic to all of them. I always thought they were pretty tight groups and I'm not tight with anybody here =P.

I'm in three. My own group plus the Achievement helpers one and the computer help one. I treat them more like chatrooms.
EDIT: why not link my group too

I'm in in three.

The Asylum, the MW2 group, and the AVP group.

I've been actually of thinking of creating a user group lately. Though the process of making one looks confusing. Then I have to somehow enlist members.

Yes I do join user groups, the point of them is to bring like minded individuals together to talk about... stuff.

I join groups. I'm in about 5 (I can't be bothered to check), but am only really active in the <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Stargate-Fan-Club>Stargate Fan Club (of which I'm sort of 2nd in command).

I think they're a great Idea. They're perfect for organising multiplayer matches and tournaments. If you put up a thread on the forums showing the unboxing of your new Deth Glider model no one would see it, and most people wouldn't know what the hell you where on about, but if you posted the same thing in the Stargate Group then you'd get a lot more discussion and jealousy (the true point of unboxing photos).

They're also excellent for organising competitions. I recently ran a contest to win a game through the Stargate group. Andy Chalk also (very kindly) posted a notice about it in the PC gamers group. That way a lot of people got to know as it was promoted to those who would be most interested.

They free up the forums, forge a closer community, and bring in extra traffic. I'm glad they where implemented.

I'm in a few. Only active in a couple of them. It's a lot different than the forums.

I feel you get to know people a lot faster there. And they are a great place to go if you can't find any threads you have anything to add to.

I'm in quite a few... I am also the creator of The Cyberpunk group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Cyberpunk-group], which is seeing depressingly little activity.
