Apparently I missed the memo......but what the fuck is this "Ouya"? A new console, obviously...but beyond that. Or is that all you really need to know about it?

I never realised that controller "aficionados" were an actual thing.
Oh yeah, we are. It's the main reason my choice of next-gen console is already made - I simply refuse to go back to the piece-of-shit Playstation controller. Can't do it. I can see why people say the Xbox D-Pad sucks, but I don't play fighting games so I only ever use it for stuff like weapon scrolling, and on balance the 360 has one of the best controllers I've ever used.

Will we really have to open the sucker up each time we want to charge it? seems like way to much of a pain....

I'm not getting the hate for disc shaped D-Pads to be honest. Yeah, the 360's D-pad sucks, but that has more to do with the awful positioning on the controller, and the horrid feel and response from the inner workings of the pad than the actual shape of it. And I say this because the best D-Pad I have ever used was on the Street Fighter 4 game pads Mad Catz put out. They were accurate, responsive, and yes, disc shaped. Might have also helped that they were at least twice the size of a 360 D-pad as well. A disc shaped D-pad isn't bad in and of itself. But most people's only experience with them is with the shit Microsoft builds with them.

I didn't even know that it had a disc D pad like the 360 controller. I would redesign the controller on that alone.

Have they inoculated themselves against the Patent Troll Anascape or are we looking at them getting sued if they show any sign of success?

SNES also my favorite, actually I am so used to it, the form of the SNES controller is actually the natural rest position of my finger (or maybe it a egg and chicken conundrum has that why it my favorite, has I only came to notice this a few years ago).

One thing about this system that kinda bugs me, didn't one of the play testers say that it wasn't that powerful? And in order to get the best out of it you had to be the type of person that likes to upgrade their equipment a lot? Because I am not that type of person.

I don't understand the whole "360's d-pad sucks" - seems fine to me.
How many other D-pads have you used?

Because... dude. The 360's is literally one of, if not the worst.
The worst? I wouldn't go that far. The GameCube's tiny little D-Pad that registered directions almost at random was pretty atrocious, and certainly worse than the 360. But yeah, the 360's D-Pad was pretty bad.

That said, I think historically people have pretty consistently preferred cross-style D-Pads. I understand why other companies didn't do it in the past, since Nintendo had it patented... but since August 2005 there's been no excuse not to do it this way. Heck, even before Nintendo's patent expired, the Dreamcast had that style of D-Pad. At this point, I really think they all should be unless they have a specific reason not to (such as Genesis clones, which really ought to copy its eight-way pad.

P.S. Thanks

Ahhh, thanks for the response. Until this article I hadn't even heard of this thing, let alone that it was apparently far along enough in developement for people to have made comments on its controller.

I'm hoping that it fails worse than the Virtual Boy. Maybe then Gunpei can rest in peace.

Cause people really need another console, and another controller, to play angry birds and fruit ninja? I already passed on the Wii U, and my 3DS XL is one of the many out there that likes to randomly crash every few hours for kicks so forgive me if I haven't given the Ouya the proper attention it deserves.

Just because its name seems to be thought up by grabbing 4 random scrabble tiles and running with it, looks like a slightly more upscale Leap Frog learning pad for kids, and has none of the resources or experience the current 3 console makers...I mean I'm sure everyone will buy one!

Just like the N-Gage

Seems less like a d-pad and more like a REALLY shit analog stick. It's all one nearly flat lump of cheap plastic instead of 4 directional buttons. It's no wonder hardly any games have actions bound to the d-pad, and never are those actions important.

I loved the d-pad while playing Oblivion. It allowed me to hot-key 8 spells. Can't say I've used it for much else though.

The N-Gage was just ahead of its time. It was basically one of the first Smartphones,(there may have been others earlier, so please correct me if i'm wrong) which pretty much everyone has now.

The Ouya isn't your daddies console. Whether or not it will fail is yet to be seen, but I predict that even if it fails, somewhere down the line all consoles will be like the Ouya, (Standardized OS, can play all games regardless of hardware or manufacturer)

It's a hundred-dollar console that's being developed primarily in order to offer a cheap and affordable solution for gaming. I'd consider it as a decent "entry level" console for kids, for instance, or for undecided casual gamers.

From what we know, it's primarily designed to run games along the lines of what you'll see on the iOS. A lot of free stuff, fairly cheap retail titles, lots of free-to-play titles.
