So, I wanted to own PS3 for a while now and I believe that upcoming The Last of Us is about to push me over the edge. However, I rent a room in a house, so I physically have no space for a decent TV, but what I do have is ASUS G74SX with HDMI port if that matters. So, the question is, is it possible to hook up PS3 to my laptop through HDMI port of any other input and use it a monitor?
I've browsed around different forums and opinions range from "it's impossible" to "I did it", so I'm just confused.

The short answer is no.

The long answer is yes, it's technically possible, though it requires using an expensive capture card and will have horrible latency. Your HDMI port can't be used as an input and shit might get fucked up if you try to connect it to a PS3. Don't try that. It would be simpler, cheaper and more effective to get a monitor.

I'd like to suggest a small HDTV/monitor instead of trying anything...funky with your laptop as well.

Believe it or not, sub 24" LED HDTVs are awesome. I use two myself. This one [http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E241-A1-24-inch-1080p-Razor/dp/B009IBXEE6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1370070209&sr=8-2&keywords=24%22+HDTV#productDetails] costs $178 on Amazon (tax free, free shipping). It's a Vizio LED-lit 1080p HDTV/monitor with one HDMI, component, VGA and apparently composite as well. The refresh rate is only 60Hz, which isn't bad, but best of all it's got a headphone jack on the back.

The damn TV weighs less than 11 pounds. That's light enough for a shelf!

Does it mean that I won't need speakers and I just might plug some earphone into jack and sound will work?

Yes, that's correct. The default speakers on small TVs don't have much bass, so some headphones would be recommended. Here's a shot of the back panel:

Vizio-E241i-A1[/spoiler]

That model I linked to has some mixed reviews about the audio. For only $20 more, and still under $200, there's this model [http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E-Series-E241i-A1-24-Inch-1080p/dp/B00BF9MZ44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370112015&sr=8-1&keywords=24%22+hdtv] instead.
