Valve Boss Gives Sony's Online Gaming Strategy the Thumbs Up

Valve's founder says that developers have to show Sony that opening up PSN was a smart business move.

Gabe Newell has praised Sony's online strategy for the PS3, which allows third parties a lot more freedom and flexibility to provide content and services. Newell says that Valve will make sure that Sony benefits from this flexibility, and thinks that other developers should follow suit.

Sony recently allowed Valve to bring its Steam platform to the PS3, enabling - among other things - cross-platform play between the PS3 and PC in Portal 2. It has also allowed CCP to link its free-to-play console shooter Dust 514 to its PC MMO, EVE Online. Newell said that it was a bold move, and one that Sony deserved to benefit from.

"[Sony has] done the scary thing and I think it's up to us as developers to make sure Sony and its customers are rewarded," Newell said. "We and other developers have to show we're creating value to Sony for opening up its network. We have to show them it's a smart business move." He said that the release of the first DLC for Portal 2 would show the value of Sony's decision to allow Steam onto the PS3, and that Valve would work hard to increase the "overall play value" of the game.

Sony's decision to open up PSN stands in stark contrast to Microsoft's approach to Xbox Live. Live remains a closed service, and Microsoft has lost out on content and services because of it. Interestingly, Nintendo - which hasn't been especially impressive in the online arena before - has indicated [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111482-Nintendo-Opens-Doors-For-Steam-and-Other-Networks-on-Wii-U] that it will follow Sony's example with the Wii U, and allow publishers to use their own services on the console.

Can Steam actually be used for anything other than playing Portal 2 on the PS3? I don't understand exactly what you can do with the service.

At the moment, as far as I know, no. But don't forget that all the new Valve games will be using it - CS:GO, HL3 etc. Maybe even some third-party developers will jump on it.
As for the service, it provides THE CLOUD, allowing you to store your saves on Valve's servers, and cross-platform gameplay, PS3-PC-MAC, allows you to chat with your PS3-PC-MAC friends. That's pretty much it for now.

Can it? yes.
Is it? Not really.
Is it a lot safer than Sony's unsecured network? Almost certainly.
Just needs a good indie designer to take the plunge. Media Molecule could certainly do it.

Does this mean Valve will release games like Left 4 Dead on the PS3? Please? Pretty please? With sugar on top?

Doubt they'll re-release L4D2 just for the PS3, but they might. Delayed re-releases have happened before... Bioshock and Mass Effect 2...

Then again, if a new one is coming out soon, don't see why they won't just make that multiplatform.

I'd be happy with Left 4 Dead 3 on the PS3 even if we miss out on the first two. Gotta admit that with Steam on the PS3, it's hard for them to argue not releasing it on the PS3.

Nintendo isn't really allowing publishers to use their own services as much as forcing them to by not providing a backbone system such as live or psn for the Wii U. We are still far from release but if this doesn't happen Nintendo will end up in dead last again as far as online goes.

Nintendo admits it can't do online to save it's own mother so they just let other publishers handle it. Lazy move but at least it means we may get a proper online service with the Wii U.

As awesome as I find cross-platform play, after the whole hacker ordeal, I think I'll stick to the security of Xbox Live for now.

I think that it's brilliant, the ONLY problem with competitive FPS games like Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty etc are scumbags using hacks to give them a VERY unfair advantage. (not just to console but also PC users)

Valve makes sense again. If only other developers and publishers had some of Valve's sense.

I love that PSN is open, I don't see a downside to it. And I love what it did for Portal 2. Glad to see others appreciate it, and that it may go further.

Now you can get Haxxored on Steam!

Also, too bad the PS3 still won't let you talk to your Counter Strike and HL:DM buddies. Oh well.
