Valve Pumps $25 Million Into Left 4 Dead 2 Ad Campaign

Banking on the idea that upcoming zombie apocalypse simulator Left 4 Dead 2 will be its most profitable game ever, Half-Life creator Valve Software today announced plans to sink $25 million into a complementary ad campaign for the title.

"Based on the strength of pre-orders, Left 4 Dead 2 will be the fastest-selling product in Valve's history," said Valve head Gabe Newell in a press release trumpeting the landmark budgetary expenditure.

"We'll be supporting Left 4 Dead 2's launch with a $25 million campaign," adds Valve's vice-president of marketing Doug Lombardi. "Left 4 Dead 2 has already set the record for greatest number of pre-orders in our company's history, and we're still over a month out from shipping."

Though details on what all that cash would be aimed at were scarce, the press release says ads for the game will appear on Monday Night Football and UFC broadcasts, roadside signage and the standard "popular lifestyle and gaming sites."

L4D2 is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PC platforms on November 17. Expect this press release to herald the upcoming deluge of advertisements that a more poetically inclined journalist would liken to wave after wave of shambling, decomposing undead.

After the dust settled with the first one, I wasn't all that impressed with it. It still wasn't the zombie shooter I've been dreaming of all these years. =(

Episode three? Maybe the first quarter of episode three in a couple years if you're lucky.

Do you have to ***** about Episode 3 in every Valve related thread? It's not like Valve even looks at these forums so complaining about it is pointless.

Anyways, I thought it came out on November 7th, not 17th? Oh well, it doesn't make that big of a difference to me. I already pre-ordered anyways.

Yes, I am programmed to do so. It's not pointless because it makes me feel better. :) And who knows, maybe someone from Valve will stumble onto this site and see this while not working on Episode 3?

Valve influenced by EA much?
And spending money to advertise their game is bad how...?

OT: Cool beans for them I guess. I'm not among those who pre-ordered but I'll most likely pick the game up on launch day.

I'll be buying an actual sequel, Dead Rising 2. Where they actually added a lot new of content, and are using new textures and features. Besides Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't have a moose head for weapon, can you honestly say it's as awesome? I think not.

I love Valves games and all but I've got a lot more fun out of Team Fortress 2 than L4D, and they haven't exactly supported L4D like they have TF2.

Yeah, and the complaining of one person will definitely get them to hurry up with it.

You've played Left 4 Dead 2 already and know all about the content, textures and features? Bloody hell you lucky sod!

Oh what's that? You've not?

Interesting...

So the 25 million will be to support the announcement of Left 4 Dead 3 at the launch of Left 4 Dead 2? Featuring a heavy set Russian, a Texan construction worker, a female firefighter, and an Italian hitman.

I kid, I kid, looking forward to playing it as soon as the current country I'm in decides to get better internet options.

... I know you're preprogrammed etc, but they said the reason why Ep 3 was delayed for L4D2 a couple months back.

No-one wants to work on it. People wanted to work on Left 4 Dead 2, and Valve let people work on what they want to. There's a small core of developers who will work on it continuously, but the majority of the workforce will drift around and work on what they want to.

$25 million is an enormous ad campaign for a video game. That's a your 12 year old female cousin, the one who doesn't know about video games, knows about this game kind of ad campaign.

No, but Valve randomly reading this thread and seeing one person complaining about Episode 3 won't make a difference.

If they think those pre-orders are impressive, wait until they show is even a trailer for HL2:E3(Half-Life2: Episode 3)

How clever taking a stab at me like that, you really got me there. Seriously, they haven't added enough for it to be a sequel, it's the same game with a sprinkling of content that was meant for the first one.

Look at Dead Rising 2, new area, new hero, new weapons, you can now MAKE weapons, they got 6k zombies on the screen now, new moves new everything.

If you want to buy it by all means, I'm not going to mock you for it. But I'm going to spend my money on something I'll have more fun with.

Don't worry, I felt like that too. XD
