"Not that Mr. Newell hasn?t had opportunities to sell out. Valve has been pursued over the years by Electronic Arts, which would very likely have valued Valve at well over $1 billion had the talks progressed that far, said two people with knowledge of the discussion who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private.

Although Valve?s finances are private, Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, estimates that the company could be worth around $2.5 billion today.

Mr. Newell said that there was a better chance that Valve would ?disintegrate,? its independent-minded workers scattering, than that it would ever be sold."

Good 'ol Valve.

LOL did anyone read Peter Moore of EA comment on wearable-computing projects championed by the likes of Valve and other companies?

?It?s appealing to them because they live in that outer fringe of I.Q. and money,? he says.

Wow.. where to begin?

There's possibly some truth to it but I'm sure Gabe would rather brand his own ass before signing his baby over to THEM.

Lets stop pretending that EA wants Valve for it's Developers and IP's.
It just wants Steam, 50%+ Percent of the entire PC Market.
50%+
That is all.

Valve has a unique governance style (extremely successful), one of the highest profitability per employee in the software industry and a wildly popular delivery platform (that is about to begin delivery of business productivity suites in 2013)... add to that a very charismatic boss and a crazy good reputation (Valve is usually among the top picks in surveys assessing where computer scientists would like to work after graduation).

If EA (or any company for that matter) thinks they can a company with this much (profitable) growth potential for $1 billion, they are either delusional or they should fire their entire business development department.

I'd like to see this buyout happen just to see how long the Escapist would last under the weight of its own hate-splosion.

But then I'd demand swapbacks.

If EA bought them, why would EA see any reason to interfere with what is obviously very successful?
That's an easy one... To Make It More Successful!

All it takes it one Active-Stupid Exec VP with the power to tinker with Steam's operation to decide 'streamlining the profit efficiency of digital distribution' would be a great way to justify their job's existance to start fucking with shit they don't understand.

Hell, a couple of PR/Marketing douchenozzles deciding using Steam to 'leverage exposure' of EA titles is an excellent idea could cause other publishers to jump ship.

I would, but I can't run ad revenue on a 9 second video that would simply say "Gamers are fucking idiots and have no idea about how an industry works in the real world."
You could chant it over and over while headdesking.

Ahahahaha. I couldn't think of anything funnier. But then, I don't really think video game companies are as evil as the rest of the community

GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!

We're not talking about some simple business shit, we're talking GORDON FREEMAN SUDDENLY HAVING A VOICE ACTOR WHO SOUNDS LIKE GRAVEL IN A BLENDER!

A Portal game with zombies and shotguns in it.

Steam sales costing barely any less than the regularly priced games.

Banning you from ALL of the games you bought for what you may or may not have done in a single match of TF2.

And monthly fees to use Steam. Not just play the games, but Steam in general. And monthly fees to keep all of your games as well.

"$14,000 to fire that weapon for twelve seconds? Great, that's what we'll charge whenever somebody chooses the Heavy."

Not that it'd happen anyway. Fairly certain that for all of its somewhat small size, Valve is just as successful if not moreso than EA. We all know who would win in PR, anyway.

Considering the estimated value for Valve (and it's money printing press called Steam) is 2.5 billion I suspect this is what happened during the meetings.

I read this as "Valve nearly bought EA" and I thought, "well, that would fix the yearly update problem. Madden 14 would be released in 2021."

And it'd probably be first person.

On the upside, fans of Halflife would finally get the 3rd installment.
And then the 4th, 5th all the way through to the 8th.
And that's just by the end of this year.

Pretty sure that if they did do the third installment of Halflife all we would have is broken hearts and broken DRM.

You forgot Bullfrog.

How could you forget Bullfrog?

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/181974/ea-we-blew-it-with-bullfrog-westwood/

Sure, Holy Moly left, but there was plenty of talent and life left in Bullfrog. Nothing stops EA from messing it up, it seems.

I guess I could explain how industry works in the real world, but it would be like trying to explain reality to a Creationist. You can try but you're wasting your time.
So please, I beg of thee, grace us with your all encompassing knowledge of the game development industry since you have such an exclusive knowledge of it all!!!!

Or you could just be talking out of your ass like you seem to be, another post down the road without actually saying anything useful.

EA is publicly traded corporation that, as stated prior, has obligations to it's board of directors, trustees and shareholders.

Valve is a privately held corporation that answers to the largest shareholder who is currently Gabe Newell, CEO, that sets down the direction for the company as he dictates, not that is dictated by purely profit motives.

One companies vision is the next quarter's profits; the other's is giving their end users what they ask for, as dictated by their current business model.
