I may be wrong but I was under the impression all the fans of the game wanted was for l4d not to become obsolete when l4d2 come out. Not interchangable characters in the story or anything like that, just a search funtion that will allow you to join both l4d and l4d2 games from the same menu. That way any map makers out there working hard on a map will still have an audience to play it when the second game comes out. Like I said I could be wrong but thats all I want out of it.
L4D2 can most likely run L4D1 maps without issues. Custom maps don`t use any of the map specific dialog options that Valve uses in their maps. Much like XP can run Windows 98 games, but Windows 98 may not run games made for XP.

To clarify, the stock L4D1 maps use sound files specific to each character. So imagine playing an old map with new characters, those sounds are not present. That gives out errors and that`s what Valve is telling us.

Valve do rock, and this just proves it. I, personally, won't buy L4D2 unless they can cross-play it or unless they reduce the price for people that own L4D1 (this would only work on the PC, of course, but Valve tend to reduce prices for PC players vs. 360 players; just look at the DLC for L4D1!).

It's nice to see that they're actually trying, but something makes me think it's a publicity stunt and they're just doing it so that the L4D2 boycott would disappear. Valve are a fantastic company, but was the whole "Half-Life 2 stolen" thing ever proven?

And as far as the old characters in new places thing; I'd love that. I don't really care about the lore, and they could just take out some of the map-specific dialogue for the old characters in new maps, or vice versa. It's not as though the game is realistic anyway, with bullets being fired into team-mates and them saying "Ouch!", etc. As long as they kept the map specific dialogue for the new characters in the new maps, then for me, it doesn't matter.

Regardless, keep up the trying Valve!

//looking forward to l4d2
///thinks the idea of a game searching function (on pc at least) that would allow people to quickly join l4d and l4d2 games would be good. Not the biggest fan of the cross-playing idea (in so far as putting the characters from each game in the other games missions).
My gosh, is this a fellow Farker? I thought I was the only one.

/Good to see you
//No one else uses slashies here
///It's okay though, we're still cool. Like China.

\Welcome to the Escapist.

Valve is a pretty big company. I daresay they'll have more than one team of developers. They're still updating TF2 after all while developing L4D2, so unless the one team (which you seem to be inferring) is magically multitasking, it heavily infers they've got more than one.

Nice to see Valve continuing to uphold their reputation as a company that actually looks out for it's fans. Too many companies are simply treating their customers as walking disposable sacks of money *coughActivisioncough*

Who else wants to see the l4d1 characters in the l4d2 campaign with all the melee weapons? Is it just me who's noticed that allot of valve/ t.r.s' games are full of dicks, the average css player is a 10 year old kid who doesn't stop shouting through the mic and the average l4d player kills his team mates for fun, doesn't shut up and plays terribly, breaking doors, signalling the escape vehicle too soon and fucking everyone over, and know they won't shut up because "valve have released a game too soon"

Then put every team on Episode 3 development. Make them work 12 hour days with one 30 minute break. Whip them if they work too slow.

You're probably being facetious but "Too many cooks spoil the broth." comes to mind. Throwing developers onto a fire, just like throwing money, doesn't put it out. It just sets people on fire which isn't really recommended. Pulling developers from their current projects (TF2, L4D2, L4D1) could do more harm than good.

Oh sure, it might come out sooner, but if it's less good than it could have been then it's not really worth it.

I'm sure the same argument was given for Duke Nukem Forever. ;)
