I am currently looking into dabbling with modding, having always been a fan of mapmakers and the like. I was just wondering if Valve's SDK is the best place to start.
Does anyone else here use it or other similar componants from other games?
I am currently working on a couple of maps for Team Fortress 2 (the concept for the maps is OK, but they look real crap) one of which is a recreation of Glass from Counterstike: Source.

I've used Hammer a little bit, it takes a little getting used to but there are plenty of tutorials out there that can help you.

I found Interlopers.net [http://interlopers.net/] to be very helpful when I was getting started, as they have a lot of video tutorials.

When it comes to actual modding however, I can't help you, as modding the Source engine requires C++ knowledge that I simply don't have.

Some critisism to the Source SDK is that the tools are outdated.

But anyway you might wanna check out this:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page

Theres a bunch of tutorials and if not wrong you can get in contact with other Modders and Valve developers trough it.
