Yes it took a little while for Vanille to grow on me, but she has. And it is turning out that she is possibly THE pivital character in the game. She drops the innocent, not a care in the world act and her character gets a lot better.
As far a party/paradigms go.
I have finally got to the point where I can unlock full party potential and all classes open to everyone.
My party now is Lightning, Fang, Vanille... chicks rule. I call them Biatchos Muchachos.
My starting formation (in character order listed above) is Rav, Com, Sab. I have a magic boost on Light and she is the best caster I have, rarely use her as Com. The Sab at the begining can be really awesome as Vanille has some of the best de-buffs and can fire many of them off at once. I have found that sometimes before my characters are in the yellow, she has debuffed the mid to weak guys enough for the other two to wipe them out in one round.
An alternative starting formation is Com, Syn, Sab with Fang as the Syn (which I am building up now), she has good Buffing spells that will be helpful to strengthen party up first couple of rounds, couple that with de-buff for a round or two then switch to a relentless assault and you won't need a med for a little while. Fang's slow spell can be a life savor against multiple enemies. I have also used Com, Sab, Sab (It's called Bully, LOL) as opening party with surprising results. The danger is having enemies that are immune or resistant to status ailments.
For general assault it is good ol' relentless assault = Rav, Com, Rav (obvious), builds combo meter fast for some good ol' ass kickin'. I make sure that if all characters are in the green, I swap to this quickly.
For Fast health recovery it is Med, Sin, Med, for general health recovery it is Rav, Com, Med (Diversity), I actually rarely use Med, Sin, Med as I find the Sintenal rather useless, but this formation will get you in the green fast. If you are out numbered and taking continual punishment, I use Diversity = Rav, Com, Med until the characters are in the green, Vanille can usually outpace any harsh damage (except for real baddies), then either swap to Relentless assault, or an assualt+debuffing.
I have found (especially for BIG boss battles) that some guys are almost immune to elemental attacks and debuffs, so I keep a Com, Com, Rav handy for when they are staggered as the elemental dammage doesn't do squat to them. Use a Rav, Com party to get them to stagger, but when dealing the hurts, It is Com, Com, Rav (on elemental resistant only).
EDIT: And it may or may not be obvious, but Libra, Libra, Libra. Use it, the AI will take advantage of it. I have had by debuffers throw debuffs that help out more from a libra scan. Like making an elemental weak openent even more so vs: a de-shell. For the most part, I have been happy with the AI, for the most part.
On PS3, hit R1 and you will pause game and get a display of the enemies stats, also helpful to know what enemies you have not Libra scaned as everything will be ??????. Trust me, Libra scan every ememy type.
I enjoy Vanille she's got a spunk most of the characters have, in fact she has so much that she could do with giving some of that to Lightning. Now as for your Paradigm suggestions with vanille involved i generally use her as either a Ravager or a Medic then when i can use Dualcasting to gather up chain energy.
I quite like Vanille as a character, but as I said in an earlier thread, I tend to stray towards strange upbeat girls. Which is why I tolerate my girlfriend for so long.
Also, Vanille reminded me a bit of Orihime from Bleach, maybe its just the slightly mad redhead vibe going on, or maybe its me
I know Vanille is supposed to come off as naive and care free, but to me, she sound mildly retarded. Than again, I was only 3 hours in when I had to return it to blockbuster.
Vanille looks her age, so there's no problem. If you're a JRPG fan or someone who watches the occasional anime, then Vanille's character type should be familiar. I've never taken issue with her and the big reveal about her past was saddening.
C'mon, that's the easy ship. That's like shipping Snow/Serah.
Go with Vanille/Lightning

Vanille
Ok, ok, I know a topic about a single character isn't the best use of a topic, but I gotta say this.
Vanille. She gives me a weird feeling. And no, not that feeling. Her voice and attitude set her out to be the kind of person where if she even whimpers a bit you'll set out to buy her 4 ponies, 6 kittens and 2 cakes just to make her feel better. Her design makes it seem like she was intended to be attractive.
Yet at the same time, something about her makes me feel as if the police are spying on me, and if I so much as scratch my nuts while she's on-screen I'll get be arrested for pedophilla.
In other news, FFXIII is a great and beautiful game, and I hope it only gets better. Also, I could use a few Paradigm ddesign suggestions so I don't back myself into a corner. Thanks.
P.S: Lighting, for the love of god. Stick. Ass. Seperate them.
Speaking as a twenty-one-year-old, I know some girls who look like her in my own age group. Take any athletic girl (a friend of mine in Lacrosse is a good example), put her in revealing clothes, and with girly hair, and she'll be a rough approximation of Vanille. Have her act bubbly and cheerful, and that's all she wrote. A twenty-year-old girl with B or C cup breasts and an athletic build wouldn't look all that different.
I liked Vanille's personality because it's pretty obvious even from the beginning that she's putting on a show of being all sweetness and light.
And, on Lightning, I liked her character. She seemed the most legitimately introspective of all of them (aside from Vanille in the later parts of the game), and uptight isn't always a bad thing.
Finally, on the whole Snow/Serah thing. I dated a girl when I was in high school who was a good foot shorter than me, but who was only a year younger. Have you guys never seen Kristen Chennoweth?
I haven't played the game, but I was watching at a friends house, and I actually enjoy just watching people play. And Vanille is such a wonderful character. I don't know people like that, so when she said something almost painfully naive, I smiled.
Agreed. She (so far) is really annoying. I just want to get something to shove down her thoat, gag her. I tried upgrading her with all those dumb useless components I found but the game won't let me.
She is kinda cute, but when she runs, her arms annoy me too.
Fang is the sexy one. Plus her accent sounds more ... correct. Vanille seems to have a lisp at times, and falls in and out of an accent.
Jansen from Lost Odyssey got annoying too, with all his whining. How he was a ladies man I don't know.
Even Hope, who I thought was a pansy weakling grew a set rather quickly. He seems to be the only level-headed one at times (where I am at in the game at least).
I think Fang should offer jello shots out of her navel.

I LOVE VANILLE. She is the Yuffie/Selphie/Rikku of this game and I liked all the previous ones... Rikku the most but Vanille is my new favorite. Vanille are going to be part of my main party. Haven't decided on a 3rd... either Sazh or Fang. I might pick Sazh or I might feel like i am playing FFXIII-2... LOL
I can't stand Hope or Snow. I wish they would both just go fight it out and both end up killing each other. Everyone wins!!! lol
Nope, sorry. Vanille, doesn't matter if her voice actor is actually an Aussie, or that she represents "Japanese mannerisms", I hate hate hate hate hate hate her.
Her alone, almost made me stop playing the game. The terrible voice acting, the annoying, the weakness, the stupid....it hurts. If I had to choose, I'd say Lightning is the woman for me. Then of course, HopeFang.
Hope is quickly evolving into one of my favorite characters. I mean, he seems the most normal-ish. Sazh is now and always will be my favorite all round character, unless, you know, he becomes stupid later or something. Snow is....I dunno, reminds me of a charger from L4D for all the IQ he has.
I usually don't mind her charcter type in previous FF games, but she took it a little to far. So annoying. When she said 'Ciao!' out loud I died a little inside, followed by hard laughter.
I stopped after around 3 hours, so I won't know how she turned out.
