I know . Why does everyone think that automaticly everyone dies ?
That is the bit that made me blink in the responses too. For some reason people seem to just assume the presence of a gun means everyone will kill everyone else, and then of course themselves. Only one explanation along those lines makes sense and that was madness brought on by close confinement in cramped quarters. Yet it is still more likely for someone to force the main doors open and run out screaming into the wastes then to shoot up everyone in sight in this situation. After all it is brought on by the feelings of being trapped, and when the only thing between you and the radiation spewing sky is a big bloody door... well it is a bad day to be guarding that door.

Hence with what little information we do have it is still far more likely those that wanted to leave just left. They took their power armour and plasma rifles and opened that massive metal door, peered out over the wasteland and thought to themselves 'I am king of this land!' Cause face it, you do become a all powerful gods of the wasteland if you have power armour and plasma rifles and they have .22 bolt action rifles and armour made out of hides...

What I found unusal, if not downright dumb, about Fallout 3 was that you had 6 Vaults in a small area and out of all of them only 2 managed to sustain some sort of order by the current time of the game itself. Vault 101 housed your main character and a small community to boot and Vault 112 housed the crazed doctor with the simulator machine and a couple other people as well. Every other vault had been killed off either by the experiments they were meant for or other unexplained circumstances.

That said we can assume from these margins that only 1/3 of all Vaults would have survived up to this point.

Personally what I think happend was something like what happned to Vault 15 in that its inhabitants eventually struck out and formed 4 seperate groups. Of these groups 3 were infamous raider gangs and one formed the town of Shady Sands.

I bet that the inhabitants from Vault 34 left the Vault and with only their weapons to sustain them became raider warbands, maybe even tribals. If a Fallout Character were ever to encounter them they would likely be the most well armed group of cuthroats anywhere, discounting the Enclave of course.
