This is a question to all the vegetarians out there.
If it was possible to grow meat in the same way we grow plants would you eat it?
Also for any non-vegetarians if (as above) you could grow meat in the same way plants were would you stop eating 'live' meat and just eat the grown stuff?
I don't think this is likely in the near future but it may be one day and I'd like to see your responses.

It has been done, biggest problem as far as I understand it is stimulating the meat into something worth eating aswell as refining the process for mass production to lower overall cost.

Doubt it's as far away as you think.

Anyway, if there was an efficient way to create meat like that i'd eat it every meal and any sensible vegetarian would have trouble arguing morality.

I'm not a vegetarian, but if "grown" meat was pretty much the same as "real" meat then I wouldn't mind eating that (As in, no horrible side-effects, tastes good, etc).

Edit: and as above person mentions, it would have to be cost-efficient as well for it to actually catch on.

It would also give us the opportunity to change it to whatever tastes or flavors we desired, dare I say, Doritos?

I wouldn't mind eating it, its not like its pounding on my conscious when I slap a steak on the grill.

Other people who are strict vegetarian/vegan might argue that eating anything that resembles meat and/or tastes like it is in sort of a way "cheating" vegetarianism (believe me I know these sorts of people).

I however love the idea of synthetic meats and imitation meats; you get the taste of meat without the thought of biting through the flesh of an animal, however the thoughts of eating something derived from fungi is somewhat daunting.

To cut this short: Fungi -> Mycoprotein -> Meat

I thrive off this stuff.

Well I don't eat meat for taste, texture, smell...the fact of what it actually is...kinda reasons.
So on part, yeah sure; I mean, the notion of eating a bit of a cow is just disgusting xD.
But then...it'll still taste like meat. So noh, I will not eat it.

Maybe a poll here would have been a good idea?

Mmmm, synthetic meat, just like in Frontier Elite II. They made it sound so tasty with the commodity description:

Synthetic Meat
This is the most common form of protein to be found, so it is relatively cheap. Grown in vats, this meat is in no way derived from animals, though most would agree that it tastes exactly the same as real meat. It is sold in one flavour, called Original, which is fairly bland and unexciting. Individual flavours are added by the user, for example Earth beef, Lava hog from Biggs Colony or Brog buck from Homeland around Beta Hydri (for those who like their meat to bite back).

If they can "grow" something with the same consistency, texture, and flavor of meat, it could be interesting. As for how efficient it would be compared to raising livestock, I'm not sure how that would work.

Well... if meat is the flesh of an animal then the stuff you're talking about couldn't technically be meat, surely, it's just a plant that's doing a bloody good job of pretending it is. :p

And some veggies are vegetarian 'cause they're allergic to meat, so if this stuff is the same in every way besides its origins, those veggies still wouldn't be able to eat it.

Ah, vegetarians who care more about the personal-sacrifice-score-card than the actual morality of it.

Although I probably can't talk 'cause I'm not veggie. :p

EDIT: Oh, yeah, totally forgot to answer the question poised. Yeah, I'd eat the plant-meat instead of real meat (so long as it wasn't hideously more expensive, I'd have it if it were a little more expensive, though) 'cause I did try to be vegetarian a couple of times but failed due to being a fussy eater and refusing pretty much any other protein source. Makes me feel sort of bad, but not bad enough to get me eating nuts or tofu. Bleugh.
