Having recently purchased many indie games in the big steam sale, I was pleased to see VVVVVV nestled among them. I had played the demo, which was awesome, and I was looking forward to the fun, difficult yet addictive platforming that lay ahead.

Little did I know what I was in for...

I played the game for a few hours when I came to this challenge, aptly named Veni Vidi Vici:

Yeah, that looks pretty freaking hard, right?
It's about ten times harder than it looks.

The thing is, this is completely optional. It's all for a little collectible. But it's right there. You can see it just over the barrier at the start. Taunting you. Mocking you.[footnote]Also, if you haven't noticed, every screen has its own name: one of them says "Your bitter tears... delicious"[/footnote]

I HAD TO HAVE IT.

This took me 3 hundred tries to get. But I got it. Oh yes.

Has anyone else shared the torment of this wretched addicting level straight from the bowel of satan?

Do you have stories from other games where you just had to finish something, no matter how soul crushing it was?[footnote]The last time I had a similar experience was that 50 second tunnel run in F-zero Gx. If you've finished story mode on very hard you'll know what I mean. You'll also probably wince at the memory.[/footnote]

Wow.
That looks brutal.

Also i hate you.
why.....WHY would you bring up GX's difficulty, especially THAT part of GX?
I had just come to terms with the fact that i will never unlock all the AX characters because of the Story modes Rapetastic difficultly....

Because Gx burned a large hole in my brain dedicated entirely to the muscle memory of those freaking courses.

I'M NOT LETTING ANYONE FORGET.

I had it once with Demon's Souls. The ancient king on the first would beat me down continuously, over and over he continued to kill me, my brain has erased the memory of how many souls I lost in fighting because I don't think I want to remember. Took me 5/6 hours of fighting him. Eventually got him and needless to say it was a pretty happy moment in my gaming life

Reminds me of the litteral hell level in Cave Story

OT: Happening to me with the above "Hell" level in Cave Story.

Two months and I've only gotten to the 2nd of the five boss fights.

Sniff.....
All those cool courses and Pilots....ill never get.....
[sup]Mostly because my GC controller broke, otherwise id still be playing it, its an addicting game.[/sup]

Anyway, to stay on topic, Fire Emblem.
Ever play a character for an hour and a half, only to have someone die because of a BS critical a opponent got, even though his crt was 3%...
And im one of "those" Fire Emblem players who cant loose anyone.....NO ONE.
Only in Shadow Dragon did i let characters die, and that was to get to the secret chapters.

Heh, I still play it pretty regularly actually. I just wish I could play it online, because it's one of those games that once you get good at it, splitscreen is no fun.

I don't think my friends like it when I lap them. :p

That tunnel run in GX wasn't too bad. It was one of the 4 "very hard" story mode things I managed to beat. The races in story mode, well, they were another matter.

OT: Once, when playing Mario Party 1, there was some spin the control stick in a circle 50 times in 10 seconds, or something along those lines. I kept trying that until I was crying and had blisters on my hands, before my parents had to pull me away from the game to get me to stop. Fortunately, I was smart enough not to go back for more punishment later.

Mario Kart: Double Dash

Not so much actual difficulty as Fake Difficulty [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FakeDifficulty], real difficulty, like that I can take... ok, I can't do it... then I just activate temporary ADD and play a new game. Fake difficulty just makes me want to smash my controller.

Fake difficulty makes the game my mortal enemy, and I WILL destroy whatever cheating opposition it throws at me... after I'm done I'll never play the game again, though.

When I beat VeniVidiVici I yelled out "YES!" in orgasmic triumph. Several times. Over and over. At 4am. I never went to bed that happy. I woke up yelling "awesome".

It was hard as hell, but so obviously doable that you couldn't help but enjoy the challenge. Lots of games get that aspect of difficulty completely wrong. I usually don't bother with hard modes.

Donkey Kong Country 2 in general is relentless. Kremland, I still can't beat you, after all these years.......

That All-star cup.

Good god, the horror...
I lost it by one point. Literally one point. I refuse to play that game now.

There's a later mission in Saints Row 2 that involves you using a jet ski to travel out to a boat while being chased by a helicopter shooting heat-seeking missiles at you. The alternative to this insane death trap is to spend a good five minute swimming out and hope, desperately hope, that the scenes on the boat trigger.

I also refuse to play Saints Row 2 now. Oh, my fat British gangster, how I miss you so...

I've been stuck on a fight in Lost Odyssey with three tanks, because the main tank uses a team-killing move every single turn. Three times in a row. Supposedly it's only supposed to happen randomly until you kill his minion that charges me. But he's done it three times consistently in every fight I've ever attempted.

For YEARS.

I think what made the challenge so great was
1: A completed run takes only 10 seconds (count it in the video)
2: There's no element of randomness. There's nothing standing between you and the end except your own skill. Sure, it's mercilessly unforgiving, and it requires a lot of muscle memory, but after that it's all about doing. There's no cheating a.i., nothing unpredictable, just pure skill.
3: IT'S RIGHT FUCKING THERE. It will not stand! It must be taken!
