So, I went and saw Black Panther this weekend (awesome movie, btw,) and was surprised to see a teaser trailer for Venom. At 37, I didn?t think I had it in me, but I did indeed, squeal like a child. I had no idea they were actually making this movie. I saw what I thought to be a fake, fan-made trailer a couple months ago, but it turns out it was legit. Anyone else excited for it??

Venom is probably my favorite superhero/villain of all time. I love his design and how complex a character [the original Venom] actually is (or was, been a while since I picked up a comic book.) And before anyone starts a diatribe about other, more complex and nuanced characters, I?m not saying there aren?t. Venom comes off as a quintessential psychotic and violent villain, but behind the bulking muscle, gnarly teeth and flailing, serpentine tongue is a calculated, intentional and quite lucid person focused on one thing: the death of Spider-Man. He would actually protect innocents during their battles and harbored no ill will towards anyone except Spider-Man, even going so far as to draw a hard line between Spider-Man and Peter Parker, treating the two as separate entities despite knowing full well one is the other. You could almost argue he was a GOOD guy with a severe tragic flaw. I know they eventually squashed that beef (after Carnage et al,) and Venom got his own, anti-hero comic book, but it is the Eddie Brock/Venom from pages of The Amazing Spider-Man who will always capture my imagination. When I heard he was going to be in Spider-Man 3, I was really excited; I couldn?t wait to see Venom brought to life with the magic of modern CGI? then I saw what they did to him in that pitiful excuse for a movie. That shit was NOT Venom in any way.

I highly doubt this film is going to be anywhere close to the true canon of Venom?s origins (likely too complicated what with the Secret Wars, Spider-Man whom I don?t suspect will be in the film, etc.,) but I?m actually ok with that so long as they NAIL his character and design. I want him to be huge, the teeth, the tongue, the slobber, I want his mouth to open damn-near 180-degrees, I want the Venom of Todd McFarlane?s era at the helm of the pencil for Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man arcs, but exaggerated even more. I want the pitbull Venom: loyal to his tenets and absolutely merciless to enemies. Honestly, this movie could be complete and utter shit in every other respect if they can just finally give me a Venom worthy of empathy and nightmares.

My favorite thing about the trailer is how everyone is commenting at 1:16 (Tom Hardy starts freaking out) "me when I [example]".

So this is the fifth Marvel cinematic universe, right? We got the X-men/Deadpool verse, the spider man universe, the OTHER spider man universe, the MCU, and now this as part of the Sony Marvel universe, which is tangential to the MCU, but it'll never be explicitly stated, so its a separate universe for all intents and purposes.

I don't know where the Fantastic Four movies fall in the grand order of cinematic universes.

Oh shit, forgot about that one. That brings the count up to 6 universes

I really can?t be arsed to care about the myriad ?universes;? I don?t need disparate movies to tie together in anticipation of some ?all the heroes on screen at once denouement? two-thirds of a decade from now. I actually HOPE this movie is separate from the rest; I think Venom is absolutely ripe for a dark, standalone imagining of the character that isn?t restricted by the goings-on in other films I couldn?t give two shits about. If I had to pick, I?d like to see Venom tied into whichever of the lot Netflix?s Daredevil and The Punisher inhabit. Or is that yet a 7th?

Am I the only one who thinks that Flash Thompson is the only interesting host of the Venom Symbiote? (well, aside from Peter himself)

Seriously, Eddie Brock is not very interesting by himself and the only thing that makes him slightly interesting is the contrast between him and Peter Parker which informs his weird conflict between feeding his desire for violence and his religiously-based need to think of himself as a good guy (which he is most certainly not).

I'm so with you, I couldn't have said it better myself.
Granted, I haven't read any Venom yet but I plan to read Lethal Protector and Planet Of The Symbiotes before I see it since that's what they said they were going for.

Not really. Tepid towards Sony, and that the first trailer doesn't even show Venom says a lot.

But I liked Spider-Man 3. :(

Okay, it's not some misunderstood masterpiece, but it's still easily a net positive for me.

You're conflating film series with cinematic universes. Blade had a film series for instance, but it wasn't a cinematic universe, because its setting began and ended within its own trilogy.

Right now, we have the MCU and the XCU. Venom is in a weird place because there's been lots of conflicting reports as to how it fits in, if at all, with the MCU, or Sony's attempted "Spiderverse." If the latter, it could create a third Marvel cinematic universe, since we'd have the first two Amazing Spider-Man films and Venom.

There were some rumors back in the day that it was to take place in the XCU, but those ideas, if they existed, appear to have been dropped.

On one hand - Venom is pretty damn cool. On the other hand - Sony

On one hand - Tom Hardy is a fine talent. On the other hand - stunt casting is a thing

On one hand - An anti-hero story that isn't Suicide Squad. On the other hand - Director's limited previous work being Zombieland and Gangster Squad, with the four screenwriters' credits range from Con-Air, Armageddon, Gone in 60 secs, to Amazeballs Spiderman 2, Dark Tower and 50 Shades of Grey

On the one hand - an honest to God teaser trailer that actually teases for once. But on the other hand - I find teasing quite displeasing

Preemptive Conclusion: Please don't fuck this up

I?ve not read ANY comics in +20 years, but I was a rabid Spider-Man fan from age 4 until my late teens, and I still get an undeniable happy twinge when I see something that fondly recalls those days. At 22 years of age, I dragged my ex to the first showing of the Spider-Man movie back in 2002 shamelessly wearing head-to-toe Spiderman garb and was more excited than any child in the theater. I got that same twinge when I saw the Venom teaser, literally bouncing in my seat and slapping my girlfriend?s forearm saying ?It?s Venom! It?s Venom!? She had no idea what I was talking about, but after seeing the teaser she?s having none of it; she was raised Jehovah?s witness, doesn?t practice, but is still wary about anything her mother would deem ?demonic,? so I?m likely going stag! OT, I made it a few issues into his Lethal Protector series before I fell off, so I?m way far behind myself; evidently there?s been several iterations of Venom/the symbiote since Carnage? Ok, whatever; don?t care; it?s VENOM! Thanks for sharing my [reticent] excitement!!

I don?t think not showing Venom in a teaser says much other than they?re trying to wet our pallets, let the curiosity build anticipation and keep the idea of the film on our minds for the next several months, hence the trailer only showing a ?V? and the icon white eyes and sinister grin at the end; if you?re in the know, you knew it was Venom and popped a 36-inch boner; if you weren?t in the know, you were curious just what craziness was hinted at; works for all involved. I actually prefer it this way; I was the kid who preferred the day before Christmas over the day of. I hate the previews that ruin the movie by showing the best parts of the film or full-frontal nudes of the ?mysterious creature,? because after the surprise has been ruined, the film has to fall back on the story in between those events, and Hollywood hasn?t been so great at that lately. 90% of what hits screens nowadays is 99% spectacle; ruin that and you?ve got a make-shift raft neither Jack NOR Rose can float on?

Wait, what? I?m sorry; can you repeat yourself? It appears I?ve got something crazy in my ear. XD IMHO, Spider-Man 3 was terrible. Everyone involved was phoning it in. I think they were cocky from the successes of the first two movies; they felt they could piss anything our way and we?d soak it up. Not so. Tobey Maguire ought to be ashamed of that performance; who in their right mind thought he was even remotely ?ok,? much less ?convincing? and most least ?good? as the corrupted Peter Parker?? And Venom? Fuck off. If the Venom of the comic books is a stick of dynamite, that pretender on screen was one of those shitty popper party favors where you pull the string and four 2-inch streamers piss out and make a mess on the floor. Other than those two major fuck-ups, I can?t even be bothered to recall much anything else about that film, it was that utterly unremarkable.

Y?know what? You seem like the kinda bear I?d like to have a beer with (do bears drink beer?) Your posts are entertaining, intelligent and manage to not be divisive or pointed while still showing an opinion. Cheers!

OT, I pretty much agree with all of your points, all except not liking teasers; I like ?em personally. But stunt casting was indeed the first place my mind went. At first, I was like ?Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock?!? Fuck yeah!!? Then I remembered that time I saw Samuel L. Jackson as the leading role in my schizophrenic neighbor?s independent film entitled ?Bagpipes Under My Toenails Aardvark? and was like ?aw shit, they could still fuck this up, couldn?t they??? Needless to say, I reached the same preemptive conclusion; I crossed them so hard, I broke both index fingers.

I think them not showing him in the suit, or even giving any hint of the symbiote existing within the film footage counts as a red flag. Like, come on, its not like you're going to hide that the guy the movie is named after might be in the movie

Yeah but universes play into the canon, and its getting confusing. Like is this world, does Spider man exist? Is he an Avenger, or still in high school? Did he fight green goblin, or the lizard guy? What about fighting Vulture?
If its in New York, is Stark gonna' be involved? And if not, why not? Does the MaGuire verse not have Iron man? What about the MaGuire's take on Venom already? Is Dr. Strange in the Garfield world?

Once you start expanding and linking canons, its pretty damn hard to go back to one hero only in an isolated world, and expect people to not have a profound sense of anti-climax.

Not excited, to be honest.

It may be the overall comic book movie fatigue, or the fact that the teaser could might as well be about any other property. I'm probably only marginally interested because Tom Hardy is in it, but that doesn't really warrant anything.

Feel like i'd be way more hype for a proper Venom in a Spidey movie.

I think you might find these movies more enjoyable if you answer to most of these questions "It doesn't matter".

See, while i can find appeal in shared universe and all the little references that brings, it started getting a bit tiresome for me when it comes to MCU, and outright annoying when it comes to other studios trying to desperately recreate Marvel's thunder.
Made me really appreciate movies that can stand on their own.

I?d generally agree, but Spider-Man 3?s Venom left too bad a taste in my mouth, plus I?m actually kinda tired of Spider-Man movies (we?re up to like 14 different Peter Parker?s for Christ?s sake.) I think Venom can bench press a solo film, but that?s certainly a fan?s opinion (you have no idea how easily pleased I?ll be; if it?s just two hours of him just swinging around and slobbering while kicking the shit out of random thugs, no talking, plot or intrigue, I?ll still pay see it twice in the theater, in 3D if it?s an option.) I prefer the darker take on hero films (e.g.: The Dark Knight trilogy) that eschew the bright, flashy hero porn for the grim and dark realities a world with such super-able people would more closely resemble, and Venom is oozing (pun intended) with that potential.

^This. To each their own, but I?d much rather they focus on making one great movie at a time over one decent movie handcuffed to the parameters set by the 3 ?other hero? movies before it, the two coming after it and the ?all-swim? hero orgy at the end. If I lose sleep trying to make sense of who and what events belong in which version of the canon from a single source of material, then all the effort is lost on me. But a standalone feature film about a character no one saw coming? Now THAT?S refreshing. I really hope they don?t fuck this?

I like Spider-Man 3. I don't think it's a "good" film, and it's my second least-favorite Spidey film, but it's still easily a net positive.

Well, I thought it was good.

The bar scene goes a bit too far, but apart from that, I think it's well done. We see how he's getting more aggressive, but also how he's trying to be "the cool guy" and failing (the street dancing scene). It's cringey, because it's meant to be cringy.

Xprimentyl said:

Sheesh, I said I liked Spidey 3, I didn't say anything about Venom.

But before I do "fuck off," Venom is both a hit and a miss for me in the film. On the one hand, we don't get enough of him. We have a film with three villains, and he gets the least screentime.

On the other hand, the film's less about Venom and more about Peter's struggles with the symbiote, so it does half of the Venom story well. It does also help that Venom/the symbiote does fit in with the film thematically. While Spidey 3 is the least sound Rami film in terms of structure, it's the most sound film thematically, and Venom adds to that. Not that Spidey 2 is without a theme as well, but the theme of "with great power comes great responsibility" is ubiquotous to the character. Spidey 2 does the most with it, but it's not a new theme. Nor is "the monster inside us" that far outside the beaten path either, but it's a theme that extends beyond Peter himself, whereas in Spidey 2, the theme is mostly just confined to his character (arguably Octavius, but that's sort of stretching things - his resonances lies mostly in character rather than theme).

Like I said, Spidey 3 is easily the weakest Rami film, but there's still plenty in there to like (for me).
