They're quite discouraged here of course, for being utterly pointless and for risk of erupting into flamewars. These often take the form of things like "Master Chief vs. Gordon Freeman vs. Samus Aran vs. Duke Nukem vs. Edward Elric vs. Etc." ad nauseum, always to little real end beyond saying "I like Halo more than Metroid." Hell, I'm from the TYPE-MOON fandom. We can debate power levels all week, though it fills us with varying amounts of self-loathing. In any case, the answer to such a thread is worthless.
But what if you don't want an answer? What if it's the question itself that is the point?
These are VS ideas where you don't care about who wins, as long as the idea is either utterly ridiculous or ironically appropriate. I don't really care about whether <url=http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8530/berserker.jpg>Berserker could beat <url=http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9884/godhand51.jpg>Gene or not. I just find the idea of a God Hand battle to be hilarious to imagine.
I'm certain people have other examples, fights you don't give a damn about settling as long as the suggestion itself is humorous.
