Hello again Escapist, I have a slight problem. A friend and I have been working on some Lets Play's, and they've turned out alright, but I've reached a bit of a roadblock. The video is 22 minutes long, so I split it into two 11 minute videos... that take up 2.5 gigs of space each. I can't exactly upload that to YouTube in anything vaguely resembling a timely fashion. I desperately need to find some good video compression programs, preferably free, so I can get back to work on the editing portion of video making.

TL;DR: Need video compression program, any suggestions?

Shameless self-promoting bump, because I desperately need the help? No matter where I look, I can't find anything that works for me.

To ensure that your video meets resolution standards, it should either by HD 1280x720 or Standard Definition 640x480.

If you're not picky about file formats, I would reccomend you compress them with a Quicktime format.
Before you open your program of choice for compression, open up Quicktime, go to the Edit pulldown, Preferences>Quicktime Preferences. Go to the Advanced tab and click the tickbox for "Enable encoding using Legacy Codecs". Now start your compression program, use an MOV container, use the codec Sorensen-3 with the quality set to 90%. (Not 85%, not 91%, 90%). Ensure you enable sound output.

I have no method of lowering resolution within my recording studio that I am aware of Accursed (Pinnacle Studio), but taking the comment of video conversion, I started trying some random formats, and found wmv to be godsend. So muchas gracias, Anarch, for the wonderful suggestion which saved me from upwards of 8 hours of video uploading. Now it's roughly an hour for my 11 minute videos.
