this is just for people to discuss and criticize the theme for a game. doesn't have to be good, just post an idea or constructive remarks about others ideas. mine for example is a horror game in which the first 3 hours the typical apocalypse scenario plays out in a metropolis-like area. you go through puzzles, some scavenging, rescuing the damsel in distress then having a final boss fight, main enemy are mutated people. after a brief closing cutscene, your character wakes up in the middle of a wrecked train, realizing that they've been hallucinating from blood loss and a concussion. the rest of the game is you trying to escape before the "lurkers" catch you, and throughout the entire thing your character is steadily losing all traces of sanity, seeing glimpses of people and things, running from creatures that aren't there, and possibly murdering a fellow survivor in a fit of insanity. the entire premise would be "what happened here? what happened to my character that he still lives? and am i really running from mutants, or nothing at all?" i dont think ill add an ending to explain any of that though. damn that was lengthy...

First, paragraphs.

Second, that idea sounds awesome.

Third, mine would be a 1930's gangster game, but very stylised and silly.

After about an hour, there's a loud crash, the screen goes fuzzy, and you're suddenly in a movie theater, but a 1940's one. People are complaining about the movie failing, and the operator says something about technical difficulties and plays a short monster film while he fixes the mafia one.

Now you get to play as the creature from the black lagoon and hunt down some scientists and such. After you complete the level, the mafia film gets up and running again, and everything is normal.

Until further on in the story, more technical difficulties, this time a newsreel is played, about WWII. Cue WWII level.

And the game would progress like that, at certain points you could even ask people in the theater what they thought about the movie, too get feedback and possibly additional information. Example, "My favorite character is Johnny (you), but he should stop trusting Jim, I think he's going to betray him!". Although, the person could be wrong, you would have to decide what to do, who to believe.

How do you propose to implement the software required to recreate these game worlds? How do you feel about having to work as part of a team, as clearly your ambitious ideas are too much for one person to create on their own? I'm thinking that you would be doing this as a 'mod' of Half-Life 2's Source engine, with entirely new 3D models, animation, textures and sound effects. The simpler alternative is no graphics of any kind, just a kind of Interactive Fiction/Text adventure game.

Take a look at the number of employees different video game developers have, the quality and quantity of their games and if they do the PS3. For example, Ubisoft have over 5000 people working for them.

Note: I don't say this to discourage you from writing a game, but considering your situation you may better complete something if you were to take into account your resources: equipment, time, technical skill, artistic ability, writing strengths as well as whether anyone would play it.

I say this as someone who has been working on developing the necessary middleware tools (programming language, user interface, suite of tools for 3D modelling, texturing and animation as part of an integrated development environment that scales to very large projects that are capable of being extended collaboratively in the future when the whole thing gets released under an Open Source licence) to make all of the games they plan to design in their career for the past 20 years and I still have lots of work ahead of me before I can program my game ideas.

At least it has kept me from getting bored.

A survival horror game set during the Napoleonic Wars. A member of Napoleons inner circle uses black magic in an attempt to overthrow the man himself, plunging all of Europe into a zombie and demon filled landscape. Except for Britain, who, confused about the lack of anything at all coming out of the continent, send a ship to investigate the French coast. It becomes trashed, it's ammunition supply exploded and you play as one of the survivors, a lieutenant aboard the ship, as he travels the ravaged hellscape and tries to stop the creatures from overcoming everything.

A sandbox fantasy MMO where the devs have a team dedicated to manufacturing quests and controlling certain NPC:s and directly influencing events on a daily basis. This would be the ultimate MMO, for there would be no endgame and there would always be a chance that anything could happen at any time.

I would love to see a game where you could actually talk to the players in game, and they would all have set responces to a certain sentence. (think of scribblenauts but the game responds to set words - ie. you want to question a suspect, so you ask, where were you on the night of the murder. the game then analyzes the sentence, then the character responds with a set script - can only finish the game if you get the right questions).

this could be used for a detective game, where you have to question people (but not from a set list such as phoenix wright games) find evidence, pursue bad guys etc.

this has me thinking though, why has there been no healthy mix with those types of game? I want to do all the forensic/investigating, but i would also like there to be some action involved like car chases, shoot outs, boss battles etc.

I've really got two game ideas. One would be a sandbox zombie survival game complete with RPG elements. It would be like Dead Rising, but the in a larger environment. Maybe as big as the Fallout 3 wasteland except it's a completely urban environment. It would include zombies that mimic the 28 Days Later zombies. You'd be able to do all sorts like barricade doors, make make-shift weapons and meet other survivors. It may even be purely a MMO where the zombies are so hard that while yes, you can maybe take down about three zombies on your own, if a large group of them started running your way, you better get away or die. So it would encourage team work, but considering you can sneak around them it's not essential. It would have RPG elements and there would be settlements dotted around, but would generally be far and few, perhaps even moving. You'd also have to manage things like your thirst and hunger, making sure you're in good shape or you'll be physically messed up, or dead. There's just so much you can do with it.

The second idea is very controversial though, so I'll leave that idea in my head.

to uncompetative:
ya, i fully understand the problems with creating a game. this post is primarily for the discussion, not planning. hell, maybe someone who could make their own game comes along, notices some of the ideas and bases a new game off it. it'd be a nice change, a company making a game based off a random persons idea.

I would sell one of my testes if they made an Oblivion-style version for Lord of the Rings. It could essentially be the same game as Oblivion just as long as it's based in MiddleEarth. I realize that LoTR Online exists but I refuse to pay monthly for any game.

I'll start with the plot idea first, America starts to lag as a superpower and its clear that it is declining comparitively with the rest of the world, so the military take matters into their own hands overthrowing their government and in a flurry of nationalist sentiment they manage to convince their country that they must expand and invade other countries.

Starts off simple, so afghanistan and iraq etc (in which you get to play the invading forces, this would be a tutorial section.) Then America starts to invade countries in africa and others without reason, soon UN steps in to goad them off, but America doesn't stop. Things spiral and America ends up declaring war on most of the world (i don't know how i can explain the lack of nuclear warfare, but it doesnt happen).

So the idea is you play as a normal british guy in london who on his way to work happens to get caught up in a surprise US bombing of london, your character witnesses events unfold as the war progresses (no action here, more heavy rain like sections, allowing you to see how the war develops as a normal citizen) and ends up with the character eventually being drafted into a makeshift armed forces, in which you defend britain and then end up fighting in europe. You also play in a seperate campaign as an american, although over the course of the conflict your character changes sides and ends up meeting up with the british character later in the game. I'm not sure how it would end as yet.

Anyhow the game can be played in first person or third person, with shooting, vehicle and heavy rain style sections. The game would be very story driven. It would also feature accurate maps of areas of europe to play through, like 'the Getaways' London. Theres alot more to it, but thats the basics of it.

In a nutshell the plot: Rehashing of world war 2 for the present
Gameplay: Story driven,First/third person free roaming action shooter.

Its a racing game set in the apocalypse. I am not talking about a themed apocalypse such as a zombie apocalypse or a man made apocalypse, just an old school fire raining from the skies land cracking open kind. You are a grisly biker who decides to spend the last moments of his existence driving top speed across the increasingly inhospitable landscape as various natural and supernatural disasters impede his progress. Although the tone of the game is that of a macho over the top derby you also get the uncomfortable feeling that the story cannot have a happy ending as the earth is very obviously doomed. Even the tectonic plates you ride on shift dramatically forcing you to slide across sloped terrains while simultaneously avoiding fireballs, meteors and tornado's. Eventually this all reaches it's climax when you hit the last level which is so difficult it is a challenge to merely complete it let alone win whatever objective is set (racing and suchlike).

A survial horror game set in the 1900's (most likely a simlar but alternate reality), a research team has vanished in the forests of washington state and you are part of the search party sent in to find them. each of your team would have a useful skill that you'd controll inderectly, there would be a forensic's investigator, a couple of cops, a wilderness expert..ect. you'd be the analist guy and the idea would be that you'd find bits of the missing teams journal and notes as the game rolls on and discover that some kind of thing is in the woods. as the game picks up the evil starts attacking your team and you'd loose members as part of the story and have to porgress with fewer and fewer skills to survive until it's just you running in terror in the woods trying to escape.

My idea's for a western... With dinosaurs!
Ride them, fight them, even tame them!

But killing (or taming) one would be no easy doings. You'd have to soften them up and then wait for them to rear up or roar and then hit them where it hurts! Do that a few times and then put a bullet through their skull, or slap a collar on them.

But dinos wouldn't be the only problem, you'd be on foot a lot having to deal with bandits, and gangs terrorizing towns.

Also with karma, reputation, and influence. Rep is how much you're known. Influence is how much you're feared or loved (depending on other factors) which changes the way people treat you, and how places you've been are influenced. Karma just tracks how naughty you've been.

Also it would be sandbox.

it sounds like Clive Barker's Jericho, but alot better. quick suggestions, 1, make the evil faceless, letting the players imagination add a extra layer of suspense. 2, it'd be interesting if the evil somehow affected radios, like you try to contact washington for a rescue team, and you end up getting staticy white noise, or maybe a ominous scream/heavy breathing.

An adventure RPG where you start out in a modrn setting with today's graphics, and then have to fight some like, dimension distorting/hopping evil that makes players have to visit level environments that reflect the old 80's 8-bit, a Donkey Kong-esque sidescroller, FFVII polygon 2D environments, Devil May Cry-esque environments, and steadily progress up to the final level which is back in the modern age, to show something of an appreciation for the evolution of games and the graphics, since so many people seem to be picking up and replaying the classics even to this day.

so my idea is a Saints Row 2/GTAIV & Vice City/WET/Mass Effect mashup. with about 25 other undercurrents that could be mentioned, but i listed the main Four. Basically from saints row 2, we take the customization only make a lot more of it. You can also choose wether to be cocky as hell, very sympathetic or neutral. Your character responding to his murders by either theatrically taunting his victims, calling himself a monster and regretting his actions, or a mix of both respectively. From mass effect we have the consequences, backstory and different paths aspect, as well as renegade and paragon system; from GTA Vice city & IV we have a Huge tropical city sandbox and combat system respectively and from WET, the insane physics defying shootdodging and epic gunfighting. State of the art HD Graphics too of course.

During the customization you are given a choice between a massive list of peoples first names to choose from similar to the WWE Smackdown vs Raw games, and should the players desired name not be included in this list, a number of titles as well.

as for the plot, there are several plots that stem from whichever backstory you choose, and continue being redirected by the numerous choices you must make. there are 6 backstories to choose from, each one may involve you having to kill supporting characters from other backstories (including the default pre-customization protagonist of each one) depending on decisions you make in the game.

i realize this is a massive post, but me and some friends put a lot of thought into this during our Interactive Media lessons at college. We also know this would need a collosal disc to hold all of this in so it will hopefully be released for the Xbox 1080 Kickflip or whatever they end up calling it. :)
