My spouse has fallen in love with Shogun 2 soundtrack, has it, and listens to it on his I-POD. This song in particular. I enjoy most of it as well.

I love big epic orchestra style game music. Singer/Choir, strings, banging drums, etc:

I know this is an Elven song about death, but almost no one at my wedding knew that. They don't play games. Only my husband, our friend, and I did. So I ended up 'walking' out to it. Everyone loved it, but I still didn't tell them what it was about.lol I could have used the Love Song track, but I didn't. It didn't have the right sound. My spouse walked out to Zelda's Lullaby, and my sister burst into tears. She's was a huge fan of Zelda and the combination of what was going on made her lose it. lol
Also I have a soft spot for the Psychonauts soundtrack.
I know people around here have a problem with it, but W.o.W's music fits the style I like:
I have a lot more, but I'm sure I've posted enough already. lol

Edit: Oh! and Eve Online has some killer music.

This time I am going with a more recent game music that was quite emotional to me.

This song really stuck out while fighting enemies in this game

This is a great song to end the game with

I JUST posted a thread like this a few days ago and nobody even looked at the damn thing.
I was dissapointed.
Oh well, personal emotions aside, I will pick my current favorites.
Two new games are where I go for music pleasure. L.A.NOIRE and Portal 2.

(Why isn't this L.A.Noire song in the soundtrack? I think it's the best one...)

I can tell fomr your profile picture that you don't play many western games.
OT: Dragon age, mass effect, vampire the masquerade, earthbound, pokemon, XIII and brutal legend.
Quite the opposite, I play far too many Western games. I played Deus Ex upon its release and even like Fable III despite all its short comings. I just enjoy a lot of JP games as well, but in my realm of Top 10 favorite games? Metal Gear and God Hand are the only two JP games that appear and they were made by Westaboos.

See, I can't agree. I really like all those songs, but some of them just sound way too similar to other Western game music. With JP music (we'll ignore the horrendously bland FF OSTs), each song has their own personality and purpose.

Heck, I've put two tracks from God of War and Gears of War side-by-side and they sounded identical. In a JP game, you'd never see that.

Btw, Mega Man games count as JP titles as do Nintendo games. Don't forget Okami, NiGHTS, Devil May Cry, No More Heroes, God Hand, Aquaria, Bayonetta, Sonic, Viewtiful Joe, Child of Eden, Jet Set Radio, and even the tunes in Madworld were all composed by Japanese composers.

Sure, Fallout and Assassin's creed have some really atmospheric tones, but nothing compares to that of the entire NiGHTs or Silent Hill 2 soundtrack.

Awesome, time for another shameless plug of my series on game music. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Top-Ten-Songs]

I'd put some examples, but I've made this post so many times I'm getting pretty tired of it. I also just woke up.

i love the Kingdom hearts theme song:
Dive into the heart is a great song:
the piggy guys is great:
Zone of the Enders 2 ardjet (second half) is probably in my top five video game themes (non main themes)

kingdom hearts 2 has my favorite ost of all time and ZOTE2 is a close second.

I've doubtless been ninjad, but the music of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts ranks as some of the best music I've ever heard - not even just game music, but the best music ever. Special mention to the piano collection albums from both, which are amazing, and the orchestral version of Passion. Eternal Sonata has pretty good music too, if only because most of it's arrangements of Chopin's stuff, and a further mention must go to Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori for the Halo music. The theme and a piece called Unforgotten from Halo II in particular there.

GEESE NI ___________ , A fighting game theme to match one of the greatest bosses ever designed. Any one of his remixes in the Fatal Fury or King of Fighters games is fantastic.

Never will I say that HL's music is brilliant. It's got some good tracks, especiallyfor the climatic battle at the end of Episode 1. Still, the game is usually best when they let the tone of the game speak for itself. It's got a few good tracks and a lot of them are VERY similar sounding. The post directly below yours actually has some really good examples of JP music.

Getting a lot of great responses.

I know it's a probably a cliche' type of thread, but I do enjoy some appreciation in video game music.

I claimed earlier that Western games really can't ever try to compare to Japanese video game music. Sure Fable, Halo, and Mass Effect are notable mentions, and Scott Pilgrim reminds me of a better time, but nothing gets my attention like the Shadow of the Colossus music posted above. Anyone want to prove me wrong?
That's a matter of personal preference. Shadow of the Colossus is pretty much the ONLY Japanese video game with a soundtrack that's appealed to me. Though people rave about the Final Fantasy soundtracks (more so than other JRPGs or Japanese games), I find them really dull.

But from more recent games (that haven't already been posted), here are a few examples that I really like...
Nice to see sosone else appreciating Crysis 2's soundtrack, one of the games best parts, my favs being

and moving on from Crysis 2 always loved "Beyond the Bounds" from ZoE2

Also surprised it hasnt been mentioned yet (at least as I'm writing this anyhow)

And finaly something insanely cheery I can't get enough of it!

I too, enjoy a great deal of video game music. My iTunes is filled with nothing but video game music. I actually prefer video game music over modern music composed by artists. I can relate to it more and it doesn't sound quite as...mainstream.

It's hard to explain. Anyway,
