Video game rumors you heard as a kid.

I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. When you were a kid, you heard someone at school tell you they heard that if you did a certain thing in a game, you would unlock a secret level or character, or that their uncle's cousin's best friend's brother's college roommate's next door neighbor worked for Nintendo, and they were making a Nintendo 64 2. Of course, almost all of these rumors were bullshit, but you were a kid and didn't know better.

  • Nudalities
  • Every Streets of Rage 4 rumor until I got sick of them in 2005.
  • Resident Evil 4 coming out in 2001. That ended up being Devil May Cry.
  • Killer Instinct 3 being a GameCube Exclusive.

"You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance."

Everyone claimed to know how to unlock Sheng Long. Electronic Gaming Monthly had a field day with fake guides on how to do so. Turns out it was just a mistranslation of "Dragon Punch".

So many Pokemon rumours. I actually went to the trouble of trying the surf around SS Anne stuff. I had a dual emulator then, so I could trade with myself to get the necessary HM moves across. While I did not find Mew at the truck, I actually got it to spawn in the sea around SS Anne and it would come in at Tentacool level ranges - seemingly having replaced Tentacool as the usual wild sea Pokemon. I've never seen any site confirm this though and a lot of places claim it's false, so I wonder if the ROM I was using was tampered with.

Maybe not a videogame, but the first generation Digimon were popular at my school. And there was a lot of nonsense regarding inputting special commands during fights. It was all superstition and basically made no sense since the fight was already precomputed when the two devices were attached. Inputting commands when the devices were separate while the fight 'played out' shouldn't do anything. Yet we all went, oh shit that guy used the Poison Code, I gotta flush my Digimon 20 times. I had my own superstition win code for pitting old digivices against the later generation pendulum types which seemed to always beat the old gen devices.

I really cannot remember anything. I don't think I really talked about video games too much with the other kids, or I've forgotten it all.

Well they kind of were.

You might have somehow stumbled upon one of the Mew glitches.

Off the top of my head, eh, the Tomb Raider nude code, resurrecting Aerith after Sephiroth had shishkebab'd her in FFVII, and my personal favorite, that Saddam Hussein was buying up Playstation 2's by the million because its main chip could be use to make missile guidance systems.

Resident Evil 4 coming out in 2001. That ended up being Devil May Cry.
This one is true tho. There were 3 or 4 different incarnations of Resi 4 in development before the one we eventually got. DMC was the first, before it got retooled.

I know the details already. Some people were expecting RE4 sooner than later. This definetly worked better for me in the end, as I am a bigger DMC fan, than RE fan by comparison.

I remember that and knew that was full of bull. They were some "concerned" parents trying to ban PS2s from stores. It did not work obviously, but some people were so stupid and gullible.

There's the classic one with the original pokemon having mew behind a truck that you have to use strength to push during a part of the game where you don't have access to strength and which becomes unaccesible once you do. It was only in the JP version I think if it was ever real.

Also there was the part in MGS1 where if you got into the bathroom Meryl was changing in quickly enough she'd still be in her underwear so there were rumors that if you did it even quicker she'd be fully naked. That one was just fake haha.

More Pokemon rumours. I had some family friends who were convinced that mashing the A button while throwing a pokeball made it more likely to catch the Pokemon. These same friends also believed the rumour that in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, you could take a rocket from Mossdeep space centre and go into space to catch Deoxys. Not a million miles away from the Delta Episode they eventually introduced in Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire, mind.

If you made it to Round 100 on Nacht Der Untoten, you would fight Zombie Hitler.

I also remember those "how to get the raygun everytime" videos for World at War/Black Ops 1 zombies. Lot of rumors/secret easter egg those days

Among my friends, it was up down left right A repeatedly while throwing a pokeball.

Probably something about the ice key or something.
There's also things like the "waterfall cave" in Spiral Mountain. A simple flat texture on a piece of the environment that you're never going to reach that would normally not be reggarded as anything turns into a huge mystery when you know things like the Ice Key exist. Banjo-Kazooie was the Kennedy assassination of 90's video games.

Well I wouldn't say I was a "kid" at the time, as I was roughly 20 when RE 2 first came out but, I remember a rumor, that I've stated in another thread, about unlocking some Tekken fighter character, if you did a very insane speedrun. I think it was supposed to be Akuma, or maybe Heihachi? the rumored unlock that is.

Basically, at one point in the game, when you are deep in the Umbrella stuff, you can find a cyrotube on the side and go look at it. The screen cuts to a shadowy, muscly dude in there, and there is a control panel, that I seem to recall you could type something into, but there was never anything that worked. The rumor, was that if you did the following, as best as I can remember.

1. Complete the game with all 4 variations of starting character, and obtain an S Rank.
2. Do not use any healing items other than herbs
3. Do not save ( I think, might be remembering this wrong)
4. Do not use any weapons other than the starting pistol.
5. Type in a specific word into that cryotube console each time you go through (don't recall what it was)
6. Do it all in less than some really short specified time.

And supposedly, it would let you use the Tekken character in the game.

And my friend did that shit, as best as I can recall to the specifications he described to me.

Didn't work, but, well it was a rumor.

For me it was Mew being under that truck by S.S. Anne. And to be fair once I verified Missigno was a thing, the truck didn't sound so crazy a theory.

My brother and I spent lots of hours in Smash Bros Melee trying to unlock Goku and Sonic/Tails (who were said to be like an Ice Climbers combination).

Lose 1d20 sanity points.
In The 4th survivor mode in Resident Evil 2 and also Tofu which to be fair were true, as for one that wasn't it was circulated in my elementary school that there was supposedly a hidden mode that you unlocked after beating Tofu mode really fast and without taking damage and that it was the campaign again but from the perspective of Ada Wong, of course that one was false.

There were tons more rumours but to be honest that's the only one I actually tried achieving so I guess it's the only one that stuck.

I heard something similar, that there were legal loops about exporting games consoles because the national security laws about exporting high-end computers were written back when high-end was very different.
