Sonic being in Smash Bros Melee.

I think its a common one but I remember seeing the issue of Nintendo Power that put that hoax up in the air. Man to imagine to think it was Snake was the one being considered over him at the time.

Among my friends, it was up down left right A repeatedly while throwing a pokeball.
Hold Down and A for me and my brother.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised that the rumor actually had variations.

Oh right, the rumor that I still follow now even though I know it doesn't do anything is pressing the B button just before a pokeball hits a pokemon to increase your chance of catching them. Does nothing, still do it every time.

Hold down on the D-pad and the B button to make catching Pokemon easier.

I still do it to this day out of reflex even though I know it doesn't work.

It would seem there were several different versions of this rumor which actually kind of fascinates me.

Two off the top of my head.

One, printed in a gaming mag(I don't remember which one), was that there was a new Final Fantasy Game called Final Fantasy Unlimited coming out. This was during the SNES days and there was a screenshot that didn't match either FF2/FF3(real life FF4/FF6) so it seemed plausible. It turns out there was some truth to this, because the screenshot was from FF5, which hadn't been released in the US and wouldn't be for another decade or so. Apparently, there was an SNES port planned under the Unlimited name and it was canceled, but there was no follow up in the game press I saw so I pretty much had to assume it was a rumor for years.

The other is that was some sort of planned "War of the Magi" game/spinoff for Final Fantasy 6. I cannot remember what my source was and I never saw it again. Even web searching now I can't find any mention that this existed.

There's actually an anime called Final Fantasy Unlimited. Though it came out in 2001 which is some time after the SNES era. Though I wonder if the anime's pre-production and planning stretched back far enough to have the name leak out earlier and be interpreted as a new game title by the gaming mag.

I actually kind of remember that. I think I watched some of it...and found it kinda meh. Wasn't it related to FF5?

Okay, I'm going to revise a little bit. The game I saw teased way back when wasn't Final Fantasy Unlimited, it was Final Fantasy Extreme, and the anime I'm thinking of is "Legend of the Crystals".

That it was possible, with precise timing, to jump completely over the flagpole at the end of certain Super Mario Bros. levels.

I remember that a Nintendo magazine printed a cheat that unlock blood in the famously blood free Mortal Kombat on the SNES. This involved putting a 2p coin on top of the cartridge. The added weight on top of the cartridge did something so that you could then input a code on the second controller which ended by pressing the start button. Of course being a kid at the time, I didn't realize this was an April Fool joke printed by the magazine and all this method of getting blood out of the game did was start a 2 player match. And place a 2p coin on the console.

A Mortal Kombat cheat that did work was on the Gameboy. You could unlock Goro as a playable character by beating the game getting flawless victories all the way. Then during the credits you did something (I can't remember what now) and if you did it right the screen would flash. I only managed to do it once but it was fun for that one time I did.

I recall hearing from someone at school that it was possible to get Mew in Pokemon Red & Blue... which turned out to actually be true, of course.

In Skyrim, I heard it was possible to go all the way to the imperial city in cyrodil, Considering there was the unrendered model in the game

In Ocarina of time, as Adult Link if you can get under the ice in Zora's domain, the cave at the bottom will lead you to Unicorn Cave, which was supposed to have all these powerful and hidden in-game items

Shadow of the Colossus and the rumored hidden colossi

For Half-life 2, I heard there was a secret ending where you can hear but not see Eli crying over the death of Alyx

In FF7, someone once told me that I could save Aerith if I performed specific actions with her. Imagine my desperate attempt and disappointment :(
