I've volunteered to help train a guy in my clan for MW-2. I haven't played with him yet, but according to my friend, who recruited him, he dies too often. So, I'm going to recommend him to watch some war movies, such as "Black Hawk Down" (I'm open to any suggestions), so he can see how soldiers basically operate. Then, I'm going to play some 1v1s with him, then take him around the maps parkour-stlye and show him some technical aspects of the game (i.e. you can sprint and melee faster with the Care Package marker, the FAMAS fires faster than the M16 and retains the max damage for longer distance, etc.).

Now, this is all stuff that I learned on my own through experience or on the internet. I never had anyone dictate anything to me directly, like what I'm going to do with my clan-mate. So, fellow Escapists, how did you learn your games? Experience, strategy guides, hand-holding guidance, other? Or even a combination of all of the above?

And how do you train to get better at a game? Personally, I get better through a mixture of familiarization through repetition (aka play the game more) and watching other people play (which makes KillCam for me an invaluable source of info).

Well, I can proudly say that I had no experience on Mario Kart and I still came first. 'Cause I'm that awesome. :p

Play constantly. I used to be crap at cs_office, but right now I could draw a picture of an overhead view of the map and show you my favorite tactics. And one big thing is tell him to listen to his teammates. If someone has a good idea, stick with him. Always stick with teammates because it's much easier to win a fight in 1v1 than it is in 1v3.

Mostly from experience. Granted some special tricks that I have learned in Halo and in Call of Duty were from guides I saw on television or from someone else.

I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that there is absolutely no balancing in that game.

I've found that no person's experience is better gotten than by themselves. If he is able to learn to play on his own at first, then take what he's learned with friends, it might help him better. At least that's what happened with me...

As for recommendations, I'm not really sure which movies would give him a better MW2 experience, but playing some private matches for him to learn the ropes would definitely help as well. If he can learn the basics, he'll be able to build upon them with the strategies that you've mentioned and get to a good level of experience.
