Legally, it's cool and if it inspires game developers to greater heights, so much the better, but I can't help feeling this is just a technicality. I mean, devs still have the same abilities as always to make great games.

But art has such an incredible impact on structural engineering. Why would you look down on something that helped innovate your field?

What's sad is that so many people care about a piece of legislation stating "Games Are Art! IT'S OFFICIAL!"
As if it weren't official to all gamers out there with or without a piece of paper stating so already?
And while we've been chasing this "art" classification, games have just gotten more and more cinematic and less about the core mechanics and fundamental FUN factor.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, an unashamed gamer's game. 'Cos guess what? To me, that's art.

You don't have to play any artistic game, just as you aren't mandated to watch a movie.

The products of this are irrelevant at this point, what's fantastic is a dev can be federally funded by nea and no longer needs to be slave to a company. AAA gaming's grasp around some of the most ambitious of devs will loosen. They can write grants and stop making things for the big names.

Not to be a negative nancy, but there's still probably going to be SOME scrutiny and attempted censorship from the haters. I mean, look at the PMRC in the 80s. Music was art then, but they still talked about censoring it. Games are recognized as art now. It doesn't make us IMMUNE to oppression, but it sure as hell gives us a damn good barricade from it.
