Apparently, video games use about as much energy as San Diego. What do you think of this? Good? Bad? Obvious?

Obvious. Its bad, but Video games are on the bottom of the list as far as we should be concerned when it comes to energy consumption.

Drains more energy, offers more entertainment than slightly less energy draining TV. That and most of my games are on my computer which I use for so much more than games. Sucks, but I'm not going to change my habits anytime soon.

Who the hell leaves stuff on when they aren't using it anyway. It takes about ten seconds to boot up a game console.

Dude, neither is Al Gore's mansion or the mansion of anyone on his silly environmental coalition....find something else to condemn the environment with.

Yeh but this is true of leaving any electronic equipment on standby.

I always turn stuff off at the main when I'm not using it, saves money on the electric bill.

But I guess as half the Escapist are kids, their parents pay the bill so they couldn't give a shit.

As much as San Diego? Well the solution is simple - destroy San Diego. That would give us all the energy we need to play video games.

DONT TELL PETA. Or Al Gore. In fact, pretend the link above, never existed.
Unfortuantly, I got it from the front "page" of Yahoo.

EDIT:btw, why PETA? Because hating them (justifiably, but still) is "in" now? (please note, I do hate PETA)

For the love of of course they suck power more than a... wait, you all know what kind of metaphor I was going to use so let's keep it civil.
What did you expect? Consoles using the same amount of power as your blender? Look at the graphics these things produce! This does not at all come as a shock to me.

..and with this come all the huge ass flatscreens used to operate the consoles.

So a PS3 is less efficient than a gaming computer? Damn.
It's pretty obvious, a PS3 generates a ton of heat, already that's a lot of wasted energy.

I leave my computer on while sleeping. Sometimes I have torrents running, sometimes I just don't feel like having to wait through the startup cycle when I get up.

Besides which, according to a computer technician I talk to, some part of the computer (can't remember if he said hard drive, CPU or something else) has millions of hours of operating time but only a few thousand startups. Since I couldn't care less about the environment, and my computer's cooling is adequate for what I do with it, I'm happy to spend a few extra pounds a week on electricity to leave the PC running day in day out.

My happiness now is more important than any amount of your children being roasted alive under a naked sun.

There is a cure for this...its called solar panels on your roof.

theres also another cure called "It wont affect us in our life time, get over it and screw the next generation they'd do the same for us."

After all...we've screwed the previous generation over already.

I'd argue that the energy saved, overall, by playing video games is huge. If I didn't spend time on video games, I wouldn't just sit in the dark. I'd probably get in my car, drive around until I got bored, then microwave some Hotpockets while I blow-dry my hair.

people leave their consoles on for long periods of time when they're not using them?
Power bill aside, the first unreliable and overheating 360's is a good enough reason to turn them off, is the 5-10 second startup really that annoying to sit through?

ps. San Diego has to go

More important than whining about energy consumption is doing what we can already do. Install some freaking nuclear power plants.
