i would say half life 2, although you would have to work around the fact that it's a sequel, and it would have a few holes, but i just don't think the first has a storyline worthy of a film. also, there's the fact that the protagonist never talks.
I don't know that this is a good idea. While the story is good and it would have some good action, we would lose the muteness of Gordon Freeman. That is part of his character and I don't see a movie working without him having dialogue.
there'd be no point in copying the exact storyline, i agree with that. but perhaps doing what steven spielberg did for the war of the worlds remake, write a different script with different characters, but with the same struggle, so perhaps about a group of resistance fighters, but maybe throw in a gordon freeman moment for the fans, where you don't see the actor or hear him, but maybe you see his orange armor-clad arm holding a crowbar, rescuing the protagonists at a moment in the story, like when you get your crowbar for the first time, and you kill the two CP guys after they shoot a citizen and you rescue his female friend.
Then maybe see him again near the end, so it doesn't feel so arbitrary, and have constant references to him from characters, like people talking about freeman's return, and "The one free man", so we can see him from the perspective of the other characters, as a messiah.
