It seems electrical items are the center of blame for most any problem. First movies, then television, now video games. Every thing from violence to sex and that terrible thing known as free speech is "video games' fault." Every political party from the democrat donkeys to the republican elephants to the independent parties north african pygmy rhino, it seems that everything is video games fault. It makes me want to rip my hair out when Fox's top story is "Video Games: A Virtual Genocide?" while ten people were killed in a bank robbery three blocks away. It seems that the media belives that the video game community is a bunch of pushover snot-nosed nerds. Meanwhile 10% of americans find entertainment in video games. I'm not sure how long this fad will continue and everyone with start blaming their problems on something like puppies; but until then video games will most likely be "the devil" in the eyes of the average ignorant american.

I wouldn't say it's the ultimate scapegoat. It's just the media's current favourite.
Before videogames it was TV, before that Rock & Roll and before that it was, for hundreds of years, the Jews. They got blamed for the Black Death and all sorts of crap up until the Holocaust.

It'll always be around, just the blame shifts.

It's just a bunch of ignorant, easily frightened people trying desperately to find reasoning for all the change that has occured in society over the past few decades. Video games are relatively new, and people simply don't understand them.

Is this merely a rant or are we supposed to discuss this?
Because this gets discussed in various version and forms many times here, espwcially if Micheal Atkinson is involved.

It's nice that you said this and all, but it's been said many times already, and it will continue to be blamed until kids get their very own Disco Robot.

For the ultimate scapegoat, historically speaking, I'm going to go for the Jews.

If a cow, somewhere, dies, the Jews will be blamed by someone.

OT: The "fad" of blaming everything on videogames will continue until the cycle restarts and they start blaming books for everything. Books->Music->Movies->Television->Internet->Video Games->Repeat cycle.

That really sickens me whenever some kid goes nuts on me it always says some thing about me being jewish. Even though I'm not, I can't imagine what these kids would say if they saw a jewish man or woman walking down the street.

I agree with Cpt_Oblivious here, people always want to find something to blame so they don't take responsibility for their actions or think too hard as to why someone did something. Don't forget that D&D and pen and paper RPGs were (and in some instances still are) blamed for deviant behavior, see the story of why a prisoner lost his privilege to play D&D. It stinks that the actions of a few people make it hard for video games to avoid complete suspicion, but just because someone plays a violent video game doesn't automatically mean they will be violent; Correlation doesn't imply Causation.

no, that title still belongs to religion and politics. Think about it, they aren't bad not something is bad, but rather why other things are. We blame them more then they blame us.

Seriously though Games are just the latest in a long line of scapegoats.Rock n Roll,TV,Heavy Metal,Comics and Horror movies have all been blamed at some point for society's ills
