Hi everyone.
I'm doing a research on videogames and learning and I would like your help. If you wish to be a part of it, please answer the following questions. Examples are not necessary but can be included if you wish.
1) Have you ever learned something from a videogame?
2) Have you ever looked up a subject (science, history, religion etc) because of a videogame?
3) Have you ever looked up a subject due to a context (conversation, article, video) related to a videogame.
4) Has a videogame (directly or indirectly) introduced you to a subject you are now interested in?
Please keep your answers videogame related and thank you in advance.

I have learned things from a game.
I have looked up subjects stemming from games. Science, or history, or something of the like.
I've looked into subjects stemming from articles.
I believe that old games of knights and wizards kindled my interest of medieval history, which then spread into other ages.

The amount of people who were probably 'inspired' to join the armed forces because of modern warfare 2 makes me lol

1. If you kill the prostitute you can have your money back.

All other things I've learned are probably similar to this, in that the knowledge is only useful in games. I don't think I've learned much from games that I can apply to the real world.

2. Tons of times. As some nerds crave unnecessary information, I feel that it is my duty to look up things I don't know much about when hearing about them.

The same applies for things in Music, Film, Books, and the like.

3. Read above.

4. Beatles Rockband kind of made me like the Beatles more I guess, but it didn't really introduce me to them...

Devil May Cry 3 introduced me to God of War if I remember correctly.

1. Yes, all the time. (although I can't think of an example right now)
2. A couple of times.
3. Several times. Usually to prove a point to a friend.
4. Playing Zelda at a young age probably got me into fantasy as a genre.

I hope this isn't for some conservative media survey that's trying to video games look evil. I'll assume it's not, and hope for the best. :\

OT: Yes to all questions.

1) Have you ever learned something from a videogame?
Definitely, my typing and English skills adapted from playing Runescape and Neopets at an early age.

2) Have you ever looked up a subject (science, history, religion etc) because of a videogame?
Indeed. As benign as they are sometimes, but God of War perked my interest in Greek mythology, JRPG's made me want to learn more of early Oriental cultures, and Medieval games in general made me look up wikipedia for hours on end.

3) Have you ever looked up a subject due to a context (conversation, article, video) related to a videogame?
Nothing springs to mind. I'm sure I have but it would be a 'real' statement. Not necessarily to find out of so-and-so object or person exists.

4) Has a videogame (directly or indirectly) introduced you to a subject you are now interested in?
I can tell you my sister all of sudden wants to be a prosecution lawyer (she's incredibly smart and talented for 15, though) probably because of the Ace Attorney games. She has them all. As for me, not really. My interests lie around the actual worlds video games collide into. In fact, games based around metal or rock (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Brutal Legend) actually turn me off. I love metal music and cranking out a solo or two, but I can't really stand it in games.

I assure it's not. This is for an article for my game culture class for my postgraduate course in game development.

Yes to all, mostly WWII history and the likes. I spend a lot of time on wikipedia learning almost anything I think is interesting from a game and that leads to a lot of differnt things for me to want to learn.

1) Have you ever learned something from a videogame? - Yes, since typing over the web has actually improved my spelling and grammer because I prefer to use proper english. Plus lots of crap that isn't useful is real life.

2) Have you ever looked up a subject (science, history, religion etc) because of a videogame? - COD5 WAW because I really had no indept knowledge of WW2 as my GCSEs were on WW1. I like to understand stories fully so I look stuff up a lot.

3) Have you ever looked up a subject due to a context (conversation, article, video) related to a videogame. - Lots of times. If it's a referance to something I don't know about, then I look it up to give me the gist of it.

4) Has a videogame (directly or indirectly) introduced you to a subject you are now interested in? - WW2. Anything else I can think of wouldn't be a plus point for video games :p.

Hope it helps.

1. No, not really, except I've improved my reflexes and I'm much better at multi tasking than most of the people I've met.

2.I've gotten very interested in Ancient History because of Rome: Total War, but that's about it.

3.No, not really.

4.The same answer as the second question.

1) Hells yeah. I knew the Elements before all the other little kiddies because of Pokemon.
2) Yes, because of Tomb Raider The Last Revelation I looked up some ancient history.
3) I don't remember to be honest but most likely.
4) Yes indeed. I'll go with the old standby Medal of Honour for the PS1 introducing me to WW2 since I was too young to really know when I played it. As well as Tomb Raider giving me a taste for Ancient history.

Yes.

I've learned that Jimmy Hendrix was left-handed, how to reload AR-15 and AK weapon systems, prioritization and adaptation skills, that the top rotor on a helicopter moves it vertically and the tail rotor moves it horizontally, military time (which is now easier for me), among other things.

Edit: Also, because of a custom Warcraft 3 game, I learned that the British had the longbow during the 100-Years War, which I think surprised my AP Euro teacher.

Yes.

World War 2 games got me interested in the real subject, particularly the European Eastern Front (here's the cod.wiki page [http://callofduty.wikia.com/wiki/Eastern_Front] I wrote). War games in general got me interested in real-life science, such as ballistics and human biology.

I imagine a whole unit of men being as inadequate as Private Pile from Full Metal Jacket...

1) Europa Universalis III taught me a lot about history.
2) Again, EU3 made me search things up on Wikipedia that sounded cool and interesting.
3) Not entirely sure what this is asking, but I have looked up video games due to advertising, yes...
4) Videogames introduced me to video games. Also, history with EU3 and general warfare.
