I've recently found a lot more time on my hands, and started watching various shows a series at a time, but this worked all good and well when I was using my roommates library of assorted shows to flick through, but having reached the end of that resource, Im faced with crippling indecision on what to look for next, being faced with such a huge array of both new shows and things I never watched due to not having time, back when they aired.

This, is where (Im hoping) you come in Escaptist! My time mostly lurking has shown for the better part you have, collectively, a taste for everything imaginable. Im asking that some of you take a moment to point me in the direction of some shows that are worth putting down a chunk of time on. I would be most appreaciative if you could not only share some of your favourites with me, but give some kind of indication of what to expect from it, because having asked friends/other places, I find a list being hurled at me of meaningless names...does little to help!

I dont really have much in the way of specific preferences at this point, since Im trying to cast a net and find something new which I wouldnt have thought of myself.
My only critera I ask you meet, is that the suggestions stay away from currently screening shows, Im after things that I can rent/buy/aquire entire seasons.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions, in advance!

Arrested Development is great and only 3 seasons long.

The Office was good for the first two seasons, so I'd suggest those. It starts going downhill in the third and I only watch shows right now out of habit.

Ugly Betty was a great show. It's a drama-comedy, a dramady. The show is about the quirky, geeky daughter of a Mexican immigrant living in New York who ends up working for a high profile fashion magazine. Obviously she doesn't fit in at first, but the story is consistent in moving forward. Plus, it's got some of the best acting I've seen in TV. Trust me, I had no interest in fashion before, nor do I really now. But I still really liked this show.

How I Met Your Mother has 5 seasons out, too. It is currently screening, but it's a hilarious show.

This shows as having a reply, but refuses to show me the reply....Is this a known problem with the forums that I can fix, or just something on my end being unusually shitty? -.-

Edit: And by posting, it fixed.

How I Met Your Mother drives me insane, but thats because whenever I do catch an episode, its all over the place with different networks playing different seasons and repeats and so frustrating. It is hilarious though, I might add the latest season to my shortlist here.

As for the other two, Office I enjoyed, but am now looking for something new, and what I have seen of Ugly Betty didnt really catch my interest enough to go looking for it.

Watch Better Off Ted. It may only be two seasons long, but it was very well written and hilarious. It's a shame it didn't get a better following.

Well I don't watch that many American shows, I watch mostly anime. However I do enjoy a couple of them. Most of these are currently airing, but have a bunch of seasons out.

Big Bang theory, nerdy/geeky comedy show. I follow this one. 4th season Is currently airing.

House, a medical show about a douchbag doctor who saves lives, season 6 is airing I think.

Dexter, a psychopath who has no emotions, has an urge to kill and likes blood. Works for Miami police department as an expert on blood. Kills bad guys on the side, not for the quesy. 5 seasons so far I believe.

Stargate SG-1, if all else fails Stargate SG-1 is a solid choice. Its finished airing, and has 10 seasons.

That right there is the all shows I ever watched more then 5 episodes of. I don't watch TV so I use Netflix for my viewing needs.

Is there a particular genre you are looking for?
The Walking Dead series has recently started showing in England, you can download some episodes.
Andrew Lincoln, the main guy from Walking Dead, was also in an excellent comedy series called Teachers. The first series is the best.

The Wire is an HBO cop show that's half from the perspective of the cops and half from the drug dealers. It is the best TV show in human history. There has never been a show this well-written ever.

Supernatural Seasons 1-5. All of those are out on DVD and essentially form a complete story. Season 6 is currently airing so i don't know if that would keep this from qualifying or not.
