Lately I've been thinking more and more if the idea of Vigilatism is a good idea. The area where I live is usally covered in chavs or thugs and I wondering if its ever okay to take the law into your own hands and do something about it. The police in our area rarely get off their arses to do much about crime in my town. What do you guys think? Would you ever take the law into your own hands?

I'd support it - there's a lot of people I'd like to get rid of that make the town a much less pleasant place.

Though then people could just go around killing anyone they didn't like.

Mass-vigilantism isn't that good of an idea. You'd end up with total chaos, where everyone thinks he represents the law. But i could try, if the situation became insufferable (i.e. do-or-die situation). I'm Chaotic Good in alignment, so i'd make a good vigilante. And i'd probably be like Batman - not actually killing anyone unless i absolutely have to.

I would (cricket bat + Chav's head = Good). But it would be hard to tell who is a vigilante and whos just a thug pretending that the other person was a criminal.

Police are tied up in red tape and legal bullshit.

Given my avatar, I'd love to take up vigilantism if I had some untraceable weapons.

No, it's not. Vigilantism leads to more problems than it solves.

Well it's relative...
If law enforcement is turning a blind eye and allowing murder, arson, and rape out in the open, unchecked, or if they're in on it themselves:Go nuts.

If it's something like petty theft or general spraypainting, the occasional fight and being a douche, or the law enforcement actually does their job:No.

Also, vigilantism is very complicated. Because, you have effectively made yourself a criminal. If the cops have really turned a blind eye, I doubt they'll start caring until you cross some line though.

Things will start get confusing when you can't tell the difference between an armed thug and the vigilante though. Both behave the same way towards each other, and a criminal could always lie about what side they are on.

TBH, the best scenario is encourage self-defense. Don't chase them down and become the monster you hate, because that makes things complicated. Just kick their ass when they come up.

They pull a knife on you? Feel free to stab them and get out of there. But don't start home invasions and personal vendettas.

I already try to. However i think its a dangerous thing to mess around with. Its one thing to shout at a few kids who are kickin walls and things, but a whole different story trying to break up a teen gang fight when any of them might have a knife or other weapon.

Sorry, just out of interest how do you try to?

Yes, I would take the law into my own hands, and if I had superpowers then who could stop me?

Sometimes it needs to be done, although methods of punishmentt you exact could be questionable.

I just said. Shouting at kids when i see them kicking fences and walls, also when i see them throwing litter into people's gardens. I don't like getting involved personally with serious things or if the people happen to be drunk. But with minor things i do try. If i saw someone being hurt, i would call the police and probably help out (having established that there is no weapon being used). Problem is, now-a-days, you never know who has a knife in their pocket.

I agree with that DemonicKitten - :) I certaily wouldn't take the law into my own hands anyway even if I say I would lmao (Unless it was to do with family of course) but it's just a matter of speaking as to what the gangs have up their sleeves!! For example - if I saw a gang of youths hanging about outside, and they were up to mischief, and they were say... trying to damage the car.... I would probably most likely just shout or knock/bang on my bedroom window as that's where I am most of the time LOL... I know.. sound sad but I'm mostly in my room anyways if I'm not out and about. They could have anything such as knives, guns, even something sharp to strike you with.... not good so my answer to vigilatism is.... nope!!!

No matter how aggresive they act or appear, you can't legally do anything until they're attempting or commiting a crime.

Though, if I had to be a vigilante, I would run around with a coat loaded with tasers, tranq darts and other K.O weaponry.

Sure, I often do. Be warned though, it's a good way to get your head kicked in a few times.

Oh and appearing in court is very bloody time consuming.

Well its illegal, and since very few people are super powered(or batman) they would most likely die on the first nights patrol.
