Ever played GTA IV and you kill a man with a baseball bat?
Last night a 15 year old friend of mine got attacked by a 17 year old with a crowbar, all because he sent x's in a text to his girlfriend. He got hit in the face 3 times with the crowbar, now he has ta get wires put into his jaw and cant talk for 6 weeks and might have slurred speech for the rest of his life.
Another thing is most people have just shook this off as a "bad day".

Fights over girls are common and have taken place all through history, that's one of the reasons why there are so many social conventions about courtship and marriage and such... to try and keep the violence to a minimum by imposing a degree of order.
People shrugging it off is probably due to the fact that it's so common, and honestly without knowing the details it's impossible to judge. We know what he says, but if he was trying to steal another dude's girlfriend... well this kind of stuff happens, they even make movies and write books about it. It's not legal, and not a good thing, but it is part of life.
In a more general sense violence is not always a negative thing, which is one of the reasons why I am against supressing it, or oppressing those who express violent thoughts.
What's more I see no connection between video games and occurances like this. In earlier days long before video games or modern media, your friend might very well have been legally murdered, or forced into a death duel over something that relatively innocent... depending on factors like comparitive social standing, courtship rules in the culture, and many other things.
Heck "The Illiad" is one of the most famous stories in all of human history, and it's basically a giant fight over a girl. That should tell you something.
