I'm trying to find a decently challenging song to keep me busy for the next few months, I've been playing for about 6 months and initially set my short term goal to play Pachabel's cannon after 6 months and that is more or less the level I am at.

I put myself at roughly mid way through grade 2 but i still struggle with timing, shifts and intonation.
my criteria for the new piece is that it should be easily accessible so i can listen to different versions, pleasant (baroque, classical or romantic not "fiddly") that is nearly unplayable but i should be able to play it in six months although not perfectly.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Anything by Telemann is pretty approachable, and I'm sure you can find some stuff by him.

There is some stuff by Bach that you might be able to find and it will give you a feel for arpeggios and a good finger work out.

yeah telemann might be ok.

Any suggestions on bach pieces? My overall goal is to play the fugue from sonata no.1 in about a hundred years or so but obviously there is a huge range of music between playable minuets and mind blowingly hard sonatas.

I'm not a violinist but I did used work selling sheet music 25 odd years ago. The most popular beningers Bach pieces were the giga or bouree from the e-major partita, allemande from the d-minor partita and a lot of transcriptions of cello suites for violin. I dont know if that will be of any help because theories change over time, but I thought I would throw it in there anyway

There's always 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' and you can find some sheet music for that.

It's not too difficult, and you can easily get into the swing of things for that one.

Unfortunately, I don't know very many easy Bach pieces, but I'm sure you can find some organ works that are converted to the violin. There's a few out there, and I think even some for solo work.

There's some decent Final Fantasy music for violin solo out there. While not strictly classical or romantic, there is a pretty romantic feel to a lot of the songs (and by that I mean romantic period music, not that they're all love songs, of course).

Also, remember that violin accompanies piano extremely well, and there's a lot more piano music out there than violin. For pieces where the melody is entirely in the right hand or just where the right hand part is simple, you can play the right-handed part on violin without too much modification. Where there are chords in the piano sheets, usually I go by playing the tonic note of the chord. Even better if you can transpose it to D or F major.

As for Bach, well....

How interested are you in gaming music? I could link you a few pieces you may want to try out. I'm also writing out a few pieces by ear that I can't find the sheet music for I'd be willing to share when I'm finished.

giga and boree may be appropriate, not sure how to track down appropriate cello works but i'll keep it in mind for later.

Jesu is actually too easy. At a rough guess i would put it between 1 to 2 months of focused work to have the piece 'playable'
it is however a nice piece and i have added it to my collection of daily practice material.

Final fantasy would have alot of the type of music i want to play albeit a bit too orchestral but i think if you reduced most of the epic sounding game sound tracks down to a violin solo they may come out sounding fairly generic and more like elevator music, something like chrono trigger or zelda however.....

As for the piano pieces it's definitely something i need to work on over the next couple of months as my music theory is also pretty bad and i need to develop a feel for chord structure and how it relates to melodies and composition so i can eventually work out how to get the tunes out of my head and onto paper when i hear them (the main reason i started studying music).

I'm interested in all music. It's great to be able to instantly sight read an easy piece of sheet music, but for learning purposes i feel i need to constantly play a dozen songs a day which are just slightly above my skill level each with a different technical problem to master.
It means i chew through a ton of music but don't often get bored and can easily take a step back and play something easier if i'm having a bad day or need to unwind a bit.

I have for the moment decided on a vivaldi piece:
It's not ideal but hopefully it can keep me occupied until i find something more to my taste so keep the suggestions rolling if you think of anything else.

By the power of google fu http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/SuitesVl.html

You can listen to the transcription and see what you think of the degree of fiddlyness.

Writing out arangements for Time's Scar (Chrono Cross), Cosmo Canyon (FF VII) and Skyrim's theme song atm. I've found a few arangements online for some of these, but none of them feel true and/or complete, so I'm giving a stab at it. It'll be a while before I finish as I have other projects I'm working on concurrently, but I'll forward them to ya when I do finish them if you want them.
