any fans of virtua fighter here?, please come in, I haven't got any weapons of mass distruction, take your shoes off, relax aye guy!

I've seen many people on the internets speak of street fighter with high regard but i've never had the street fighter bug, I was always a Killer Instinct and Virtua Fighter man, with the laters methodical approach to fighting, what makes me love VF so much (especialy since the Llindberg version) is the lack of CHEAP ASS juggles, with the emphasis on the timing of your chosen character, not your ability to keep your opponent in the air to chip away at health.

I've noticed its very difficult to button mash a victory with VF, and Killer Instict for that matter, which is why I love them so.

So do you play the greatest fighter in existence?, and if so which character and tactics?

I love VF. But my parents were never big into consoles, so I only had virtua fighter 3TB for the Dreamcast. Friends had VF4 and VF2 back in the day, but I agree that button mashing doesn't work in the game.

Also, "what makes me love VF so much (especialy since the Llindberg version) is the lack of CHEAP ASS juggles, with the emphasis on the timing of your chosen character, not your ability to keep your opponent in the air to chip away at health."

I agree wholeheartedly. The thing is, you actually had to learn the game, which made it frustrating to a point for some players, but it made it even more fun to master for me.

Also, Killer Instinct, I have KI:Gold for the N64 now, but my highest combo in it is only with an ultra finisher, something like 73. I forgot. Once you master the combo ring it's pretty easy to get consistent 20-hit combos (unless they break you at the right time which most people find difficult to implement.)

Street Fighter 2 still has a place in my heart, because it's probably the best 2D fighter I've ever played. I kinda hope 4 stays similar.

Indeed, If you haven't played VF since number 3 or 4 dont expect to n00b some pwnz any time soon, its probably why it isn't that popular, you can become a profecient player of Tekken 5 in 2 or 3 weeks without playing the prequels but Virtua Fighter doesn't work that way.
So who was your favourite character?

mines Leon Rafale (which my friends call gay french man), in VF2 he was overly quick, to the point that you could dash in strike once or twice and dash out of harms way before anyone could counter... anything more elaborate would get you killed though. He's been seriously slowed down for the sequels, but I still love the gay franch man, and against my friends they can't beat me with him, since I've learned all the nuances he has in fighting, while they got into VF at number 3.

I get my ass whooped with any other fighter though, since i've only just started to play as anyone else at the VF5 iteration.

C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!
totally had to split your comment that way, it was the only way.

if you want cheap combo use TJ combo, his punches are quick enough against anyone in corner for them to register without using linkers and combo moves, the combo counter stops at 99 so after 30 seconds stop using light punch and you'll get 99 hit combo.

Its a shame that KIgold for N64 isn't as deep and complex as KI2 arcade, a huge amount of combo variations is missing, I still get a stiffy over the graphics for that. Although the reason for that is GOLD has 96 megs of ram, while KI2 had about 216 I think, i'm off to check it out now.

While I played, I used Jacky mostly.

I tried everyone out a bit, but he was just one of my favorites if I timed his lightning combos well.

Also, my problem with most fighting games is that my friends can be playing for like 4 weeks and if someone who's never played the game can pick a random character and beat them by slamming random keys (happens with me vs them sometimes, them vs me sometimes, depends on the game), then it's a pretty flawed design.

And that never happened in VF, which is why I loved it.

Also, I had no idea about that KIGold vs KI2.

I used mostly Saberwulf (Sabrewolf?) when I played, and Fulgore I tried for a bit but some of his combos were annoying to pull off.

I used Glacius a lot too. Since I was alright with Saberwulf, Maya's moves were basically the same so I was ok with her too (made me random a bit). I think the only character I was really bad with was Tusk, and TJ Combo for a while.

You use Jacky bryant?, I'm digusted!, GET OUT!, man I seriously hate him, I dont know why!

Fulgore is a serious character, he doesn't make sense if you don't know how to use him, but in the first game he was easily the strongest character along with Riptor, even stronger than the boss.

I played VF4 Evo with friends for a good while, on and off.

My main was Vanessa Lewis. I loved how she used a relatively realistic H2H style, had inputs simple enough that I could concentrate on tactics instead of the stick, and seemed to have tools to handle most situations. Played about 2/3 defensive mode and 1/3 offensive mode. Technically, I got to the point where I could successfully connect low throws after a blocked sweep, escape a throw now and then, and rarely exposed myself to a guaranteed throw situation. I could not use the reversals though.

I played a little Akira on the side whenever Vane was beating my friends too long in a row. Didn't have the insane stick skill necessary for proper Akira, especially for DLC / SPoD / knee, or reliably chaining crouch dashes after dashes and other crouch dashes. Often the crouch dash didn't come out right, and then I'm stuck there doing something like the medium punch instead of the palm, and get punished badly.

My friends played Pai, Wolf and Aoi.

Yeah, Jacky's pretty lame nowadays but it was a long time ago. Besides, I liked him more in 2 than 3.

I've played 4 but then my friend broke his PS2, so...Kinda sucked. I played everyone to a point but he was my best. My second was probably Shun Di. I liked his stance system.

VF3 was crap, but VF4 was kind of fun. I can't stand the "by the books or button mash as Lei-Fei" gameplay, though.

I like VF. It's not really my main game (SF3 is), but out of all the 3D fighters, I like it the most. Simplistic controls, balanced as hell gameplay and there's still lots of deep strategy that goes into the game.

My main still is Vanessa. It's always hilarious seeing button mashers getting caught in Vanessa's reversals while I don't have to do much of anything myself, since Vanessa's default idle stance catches errant punches by default.

I'm still kind of pissed they dropped the training mode that was in VF4 Evo from the console versions of VF5. Instead, you get a silly "exercise" mode like in DOA4 where the only knowledge you gain from it is how to input the moves.

It's much closer to Street Fighter II than it is to III. None of the characters in III are there, for instance, and the options you're given for defensive play have all but been gimped.

I've never had the chance to play anything past VF 4, but the series has always been a good one for me. My main was Jeffry. He was a great character for punishing mistakes and he had brutal grapples. And sometimes I'd switch up to Shun Di. The old drunk had the best representation of his style ever seen in a video game.

I really like Virtua Fighter, but I find it's the kind of game you have to practise a lot with to remain good at, and if you don't play in a while it's almost like starting again the next time you play.

My favourite fighter is Goh, since he's the only decent representation of a Judo fighter I've ever seen in a game, and he's got a huge repertoire of throws. He got some fairly easy, simple yet effective strikes too, but the grappling game is where it's at.

Lei-Fei is quite fun too, since you don't have to be all that good with him to pull off some impressive looking moves.

I had virtua fighter 2 on saturn. Kage was a definate favorite as was Leon. Wolf's fighting style was very interesting, and I liked using Jeffry.
