I can only suggest that you check your speakers are plugged into the sound card instead of any sockets you have on the PC case. Look for a line of audio sockets at the back of your PC and plug it into the green one (and if there isn't a green socket just try them all in turn).

Vista is just a large problem.

I knew some snarker would do this.

Microsoft fixed Vista fairly quickly, so all the "problems" with it are mythical for the most part.

This one however, sounds like a general compatibility problem... are you sure your speakers are the default device? Are they on? Did you restart?

I'm actually using vista as we speak because I can't be bothered formatting my laptop (it came with it). I have a perfectly good computer with XP for anything important.

Vista has not been fixed. That's bullshit. It's still a ram-hog. It sometimes decides to uninstall drivers for things and problems like his sound issue are common place. Not to mention it crashes constantly and is about as navigation friendly as an old soviet union bunker.

Trust me. I'm using it. Fully updated and on a pretty damn good Laptop.

I use Vista and have non of those problems or any other problems

Vista is pretty hit or miss with its drivers. Some computer setups work just fine while others are plagued with incompatibility issues. Sounds like you fall into the latter category.

As for a specific solution, you need to provide more information. Did you just do something (like did you just install that sound card?) or did your sound work in the past and then it stopped? What have you done to your computer recently that might have made it fail? Have you checked all your system volume settings? Is there a soundblaster forum where you could ask more expert users or search for similar problems?

I can't say I've ever found the Escapist to be helpful solving tech problems unless it's specific to a game that people play. But good luck anyway.

Hrmm, I used it since day one until a month ago (Windows 7 FTW). The only real problem I ever had - ever - was it being a RAM hog (but I had four GB, so that didn't matter too much).
