I'm at my dorm room at the moment and want to have private internet access, among other things. So i heard about virtual private networks. Does anyone have any suggestions for reputable ones?

CyberGhost is a good one that I've used. There's a deal [https://store.cyberghostvpn.com/848/?scope=checkout&cart=137566&coupon=FT1-95M-DW6&x] to get a year for £13 as opposed to the normal £69.99 price. There is also a free version but only allows 1GB data a month or something, which is good if all you do is browse I suppose. I have had trouble connecting to The Escapist with it though.

You probably won't be able to use a vpn. For vpn to work you need the dorm firewalls to allow vpn pass throughs and by default they are turned off.

Is there anyway i could test this without alerting them? Or no? I am not too tech savvy.

Short answer you can't. Virtually everything can be logged, an attempted vpn will show up in the data. That does not mean that logs will be monitored and action will be taken. The best thing to do is to check the rules or email support and ask them if vpns are allowed. A word to the wise, even if you do establish a vpn, torrent data has a fingerprint. They might not know what you are downloading but they can find out if you are using torrents.
