My family is home for Thanksgiving this week, I back from school and my sister back from hers in Syracuse.

My sister in question has never showed more than a casual interest in games, and would play your classic platformer or adventure game like Mario, or Zelda. I remembered that she started playing a few RPG's when she had the time on my old GBA, but never did she play more than an hour or so at a time, and it was just a casual hobby I assumed she picked up from me, her big brother.

At this very moment, she is sitting in the other room playing some free MMORPG called Fiesta. I walked by taking a glance at her screen and upon seeing the Health and Mana meters, the inventory menu, and her little Avatar (Riding a raccoon mind you,) I was instantly caught off guard. Asking her about it, as I've never heard about it before, and mumorpuger's not being my thing, I found out that She has not one, but TWO characters, one being a lvl.60 Fighter, and another being a lvl.49 Cleric.

I was stunned, and shocked really. She never showed more than casual interest before just as anyone might, but now she's a budding gamer, and well...I think I might shed a tear...Ok not really but you get my point.

So... Do you know of anyone that you wouldn't dream in a million years enjoyed and was devoted to gaming but you've found out that they are?

Nope... But hey, I usually hang around gamers and... Wait a sec, I think I know someone. Yes she was a girl. Was 4 years ago, I was out at a bar and incidentally wearing one of my Quake III based shirts (Geeky I know but it's actually quite funny). My friend introduces a girl to me, she's small, and unassuming. Somewhere in the night I take off my overshirt revealing the Q3 T-Shirt underneath. And she's like "You play Quake III?" Anyways after my few minutes of jaw hits floor moment, I said "Yeah, I do... A lot..."

Couple weeks later we play online. Turns out she's damn good. She plays CTF mostly, but damn is she quick. She beat me into the dust. I lost contact with her eventually, shame she had a boyfriend. I would've given her a piece of my skin flute. :p

Same thing with mt History teacher. Apparently he was playing AoE in the middle of a lesson.
That is so awesome.

The only thing related to this I can think of was one time when I saw my dad playing Flight Simulator. He'd been flying a 747 for a few hours and was getting bored, so eventually he said "Hey look!" and then flew into a mountain, and laughed.

It wasn't so much shock that he played games, but shock that he played them the same way I do.

So this isn't about a 'the Tick' game? Drat.

Well my dad had an atari when I was younger, so I wasn't too surprised when he started playing war games on the ps2, but then I came home one day to find him gleefully driving round San Andreas killing all and sundry. I was shocked and amazed.

My Grade 11 Science teacher booked a full week off to stand in line for the Halo 2 launch, then buy several copies, playthrough the game numerous times, and when he got back from his one week off.. He started selling his spare copies of the game to students 5 bucks more than the launch price.

Today he is no longer with us, died in a car crash just a few months ago.

RIP Mr. Hague. Best fucking teacher ever....And because he pretended to nearly stab a girl with a Czech bayonet in ancient civilization class..brilliant.

Heaps of people at uni game, doing engineering their aren't enough girls around to stop us talking about it openly, so it's usually obvious who does and doesn't. We have one guy who spends all his time chatting up the biomed girls (who we have a few classes with), and being the real ladys man that he is I was somewhat taken aback when he decided to share the love that is his 16gb usb that was crammed full of multiplayer games (quake, UT etc).

this is really great when it happens. the best was for me, i was playing Guild Wars and my girlfriend came over, and she asked if she could have a character on my account. I heard a heavenly choir.

My Grandad - he wanted to borrow some PC games. I gave him Stronghold (original) and stronghold Crusader, and Sudden Strike, and Battlefield 1942, and he is still playing them a year from then!

I never expected my step-father to play video games, but while he is not as big a gamer as I am, he is good at FPS games.

My wife! She liked simple games (Similar to the OP's sister), but I was playing Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and she said 'could I play?'. Floored me that she even asked! The it turns out she LIKES the game! She went from Mario to tactical shooter. Now she'll ask me if I want to 'shoot some terrorists' and she even played Left for Dead with me!

She's not bad, either.

Every time my sister's Fiancee is over me, my brother and him will chat about Video Games and my sister will roll her eyes. It's very funny. It'll be great to as my fiancee is spending x-mas with us this year so there will be four geeks in the house. Booya.

A teacher who used to teach me life sciences plays WoW.

Also, a girl I know. Smoking hot, does professional modelling. Plays WoW. Vividly.
She asked me next time I held a LAN party if she could join.

One of my science teachers, 50+, beat the crap out of me in StarCraft (I would never have guessed that he played anything). I have yet to live down the shame...

My boss is into Xbox 360 gaming, more on the Oblivion end than the Halo end though she does play shooters too. (Coop with her husband usually.) A lot of the supervisors here are into WoW too.

Though I don't know him personally, I was surprised to hear that Daniel "James Bond" Craig is a gamer... who quite enjoyed (according to Major Nelson's blogcast) playing a prototype build of Quantum of Solace while shooting the film. (Pun on "playing with himself" omitted to maintain some modicum of good taste.)

(I'd pay money to see John Cleese playing on a Wii.)

Well, I wouldn't say it's especially surprising, but my Dad played a lot of video games growing up, and in fact he is actually on the dev team for a freeware dungeon crawler called Nethack, if any of you have heard of it.

This year I found out a bunch of my teachers are gamers. We played a lot of the same games too, because I play loads of older games due to the hardware shortcomings of my craptop. One of them I actually discovered on a UT99 server. I told everyone on the server I had to leave because of a essay on [forget what it was]. Then one of the people on the server said "wait a minute, do you go to x school", and I said yeah. It turned out it was my teacher. She's not bad at UT either.
