Resident Evil 5 HD trailer (8/10/08) [http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/734381/resident-evil-5/videos/re5_tgs_100808.html]

Having been following the core RE franchise for as long as I can remember, the teasers for RE5 had me pretty excited. The details were scarce, the gameplay familiar, and the atmosphere seemed frightening again. Now there's a 'massive' over three minute long trailer on IGN (link at the top), and I can't help but feel betrayed.

I look at the trailer, and I'm most impressed with the character models above all else. The rest seems so... foreign (for an RE game) and generic (for a high octane action game). The action set pieces seem to be blown out of proportion, for example in the scene where Chris mows down "zombies" on motorbikes with a truck mounted gun in a high speed chase. Besides the return of Chris and Wesker and dropping Leon's name, RE as it was in the days before RE0 seems to be gone for good.

Maybe I'm reading into this too much and letting the fanboy part of me out more than is safe or reasonable. Of course I'll pick this game up, my main point is that what I was teased with over a year ago has literally been flipped upside down.

(this is the part where I ask what you, The Escapist community, think about how RE5 is shaping up)

edit - I put zombies in quotations because I know they may or may not be the listless flesh eaters from RE games past. Just wanted to clear that up in case the bout of semantics in the first few posts was a result my use of the word "zombies."

THEY AREN'T ZOMBIES GOD DAMMIT!

I'm sorry, but it pisses me off when they think that these people are Zombies because it fuels some stupid arguments.

"If dey diz zombez, why canz dey use de torches and de shit dike dat?"

They are normal, intelligent humans, only the plagas destroyed their personality.

It's much easier to beat the criminally stupid than to say that every time.

Well that was certainly odd.

How are zombies operating motorcycles. Usually they can't even operate a doorknob.

And wait, since when did the T-virus NOT turn people into zombies. I thought that was the whole basis of Resident Evil.

Actually, the basis of RE is the G-Virus and the ensuing bioweapons race. The T-Virus is the common zombie juice, but that's not what everyone is after.

Remember: G-Virus creates hideous mutations, T-Virus creates the common household zombie.

It isn't the T-Virus you T-Bag.

Play resident evil 4.

It's a form of parasite known as Las Plagas.

Resident Evil Trailers are for me just a reminder that these games are definitly NOT played for the Story.

RE4 was one of the few games where i felt like i should just skip the cutscenes, and RE5 looks like i probably will do that this time.

Agreed. How can a guy with sunglasses and cat eyes NOT save it? :D

Also, isn't RE supposed to be about the Umbrella corp? Fanboys will probably slap me silly but shouldn't that be involved with RE5 somehow?

Good to see the continuing resident evil tradition of shoddy dialogue. i'll probably get this game anyway, just to see how it is for myself.

although i've only played RE0, ER5 seemed different in the atmosphere. one of the things i like about zero was that in a alot of places it was dark and the not-zombie-zombies or whatever they are jumped out at you and all you had was a pistol for protection which made some terrifying and very enjoyable times. its not that scary when you can mow them down in half a second, then they just become a minor inconvenience.

I always thought that Wesker was the most badass character in the entirety of gaming. I'm always so disappointed whenever I see him eliminated in the first round of every friggen GameFaqs character battle.

I loved re4. But I didn't like the series until that point. So I'm thinkin RE5 will probably still be as good as I can hope for these days.

Pardon me, I haven't played RE4. So get off my back. No one ever mentioned parasites and shit.

You didn't have to be such an asshole about it.

It's fun mentally ticking off 'things that were probably added since the Racism Allegations' I noticed in the first bit of the trailer someone says 'It's just like whatever-the-hell-went-on-in-the-previous-game!' which could be a semi-subtle 'Look, we weren't racist then, and we aren't doing anything different' shout. I'd love to have seen what the final product would have been like had they had no feedback. Coffee lady sure sprung out of nowhere (and isn't she just Lara Croft anyway?)

Also, why is Chris so BIG? I mean, muscles and all that are part of the action-hero thing, but those arms are like gigantic hams. I'm sure he used to be skinny and ginger.

Agreed, the game has definitely gone into a different direction since RE4. Not a bad direction at all, RE4 is one of the highest scored games of all times, but it's just not Resident Evil anymore ^^;

Or another way to put it, it's just no Survival Horror anymore
