I'm hearing all these people pledging themselves to Barrack Obama and the school says we're watching a press coverage tommorow that could determine our lives.

Can someone please explain?

If you're serious, I'm pretty confused.
Sure, I live in the UK, but I don't understand.
What could be so important?
New laws? Another terrorist threat? War?

Meh, I don't know, I'm going to follow this thread and see what people think.

You and me both. This looks like it could get interesting, even though I've heard nothing of it until now.

Propaganda really, the video is Obama telling the in-school populace to stay in school to acheive something with their lives (or was that already shown?), or some such thing. As for people pledging to him, they're just nutters, ignore them. There is no one human worth pledging your life for, a cause maybe, but not a single man.

I heard all about that and they played it at my school but I'm lucky enough to have not had to listen to all of his lying bullshit, but it seems almost all of my friends weren't so lucky because they all had to sit through it.

The topic of Barack Obama is touchy at best. A lot of people either think that he will take the US into a better age or that he is a socialist NAzi. I actually had an argument with a man outside the Motor Vehicle Administration near where I live becasue he was shooting down not only Obama's new health care plan, but also other people such as Al Gore. He was even giving out pamphlets showing Obama with a Hitler mustache.

To answer you question properly, people are afraid that they might either have less freedoms or more. Conservatives are scared of their rights, which is understandable, but a lot of their arguments are not based in detailed research or fact. The best I can offer is to research Obama's health care plan yourself and decide what it means. It is not as bad as a lot of people might think. It certainly does not restrict people's choices in determining their own health care, but provides health care to those who choose to follow the plan. It's not like people have to give up their private health insurance for the government plan.

Today is his big speech (again) to congress on his health care reform. People are saying he may be basically giving congress an ultimatum. Like everything else in America, the country's opinion is split. Gotta love our two party system. What I love even more is how dumb Amercians are for thinking of our president as our king. Its like nobody even cares anymore about the other two branches of government which are supposed to have equal power. Our media just loves celebrities, hence we only care about Obama, and nobody else in our govt.

The Prez is basically the face of the Executive branch. There's not really any position in the Judicial or Legislative branches that is similar. Speaker of the House? That person could be replaced in two years without anyone noticing.

I think most people interested in global politics would be fairly interested to see the Speaker of the House get replaced. Even if they weren't interested they'd certainly notice.

He's going to announce war on the European Union. Mmmmhmmm.

if anything, obama has given too much power to congress and hasn't stepped forward and explained exactly what he wants to see in health care reform. if he does that tonight and makes a convincing argument for it, he'll go a long way towards reversing his declining approval ratings.

They mean your lives depend on being good students and getting good jobs, which is what Obama will talk about.

Just so everybody is clear

That exactly my point. Why do we need a face in the first place? Isn't democarcy supposed to be a fair representation of all people, without giving one person too much power or say. Oh, thats right, we aren't a democracy anyways.

Exactly right. Also, there was alesson plan to go along with it, but it was repealed due to being 'too fascist'. It basically said "What can you, the student, do to help President Obama?"

I've already watched it. It's just Obama saying everything your parents have been saying since you were five "Stay in school so you can get a good job" "Work hard" "You're our future!" it's nothing special so quit losing your marbles.

Which I felt was utterly pointless.

The students that are already doing well, don't need to be told twice to do that.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the students who are deliberately not doing well in school won't give two shits about trying to do well anyway.

All in all, it was a waste of twenty minutes best spent doing something else. Like push ups.

Go ahead, say what you will about my views, but I was completely indifferent to his speech and the very unlikely change in the status quo.

As for the health care, I'm not paying for it and I'm not watching it.
