Well I've been playing sports champions, most notably gladator arena, recently and thought, I'm a bit fed up with FPSs lately, I want something outside of that.

I also recently noticed a game similar to the one I'm about to explain on PSP.

What I want and what's missing is a gladiator areana game, a game where you start off a noob, fight people online in massive areana tournaments, or even coop with others against monsters using a Shadow of the Collosus type of fighting mechanic combined with dragon age or heck, even sports champions gladiator.

You rank up, during the tournament, you kill opponents and take thier armour and weapons during the matches, heck, you too should lose bits of your armour as you get attacked.

Anyway, the thought was pretty awesome and its something I could get addicted to if it's done right :D Blood ahoy, and even custom celebrations = awesomeness

What do you guys think? Or do you have other original ideas for addictive games?

It's not a bad idea as far as ideas go, though I can see alot of rage and bile for it when up against {A} the kind of trash-talking punk that punk who plays way too often that people hate on FPSs and {B} people who find ways to cheat. Not saying this is necessarily inevitable, but it IS possible.

As for me, I leave addictive gameplay to Newgrounds. They've made some really kick-ass stuff there and it doesn't cost me a thing.

Well it takes time to develop new conventions in gaming. The idea is certainly good. Ive conceptualized something similar on several occasions. Ive been wanting something like this at the very least since the early days of everquest when I got heavily into dueling.

Basically it wouldnt take much to merge an RPG base of a game to allow char building and customization and put it into a shooters architecture of match making/ladders/tourneys etc but for some reason weve just not seen it done yet.

I think MMOs are perhaps the best way to accomplish this. Center an MMO around the notion of the game world is built around your ability to quest/adventure for better gear and components for tradeskills so that you can obtain better skills/gear purely for the purpose of competing head to head, but thus far MMOs tend to much this up with trying to force PVP into a team affair and diminish the notion of personal pride in ones build, skillset, and techniques.

It wouldnt take much. Craft a world where the world is centered around bloodsport with arenas around several cities across the game world. The places where you can fight monsters or harves in general only yield things such as tradeskill components, or items to be resold. Profits from these activites can buy your gear, improve your array of techniques at your disposal, However level progression is done via an online matchmaking system where you earn exp points in arena areas. Your levels increase your stats which in turn can do things like boost HP/MP or increase efficency in various metrics such as defense, accuracy, dmg, etc. Sort of how Demons souls levels reflect your skill improvement.

But to do all of this right, the most important thing is to have an insane level of depth in char customization. Im not refering to esthetic customization, but a wide variety of spells/skills/techniques/classes etc that it basically boils down to there is basically no two players who will end up playing identically.

Yes, this idea is long overdue.

OT: Also.. where this is an world focused around blood sports in arenas, set up a system to make it relatively easy to watch others in their matches. Incorp the ability to record an individual score card that tracks your arena history. Then allow this information to be retreivable by other players and set up in game gambling as sort of an activity. This way certain players who have great skill and remain dominant for long periods have the ability to gather actual community fame, and even have championships which can be gained, defended or lost.

Right on point with the idea I had in mind :D

I was also thinking of say, an endurance mode, 30 people start off in the arena, there are 12 monsters to get through, starting with weaker but sufficient in numbers all the way to stronger but less. How many can survive until the end. Though a mode like that would take up a great deal of time :/ You'd have to pre-warn gamers.

Character customization would very much be important, because to me, the most important feature of battling in gaming is damage, like racers, in a game like this, you'd expect to see lasting damage until the end of the match / tournament when you can rest up. Of course during the match, flimsy weapons might break, promoting the notion of grabbing something else to use as a sheild or weapon, and body parts should also be able to be crippled, severe blood loss an option if you love a challenge (only in certain matches). I like the whole experience and reputation thing :D I wouldn't want to go head to head with an experienced gladiator as a noob :D Instant decapitation.
