Been meaning to get into teh metal gear Series, just to see what the fuss is about. Also I want to know why MGS: Rising seems like a big deal. What so good about Metal Gear?

if I wanted to get into teh series, where do Is start to fully understand the story?

Conditions:

Consoles Available: PS2, Wii, 360, and PC ( Emulation, but I'd prefer not to go to that)

( Can't buy it online.)

So can you guys help me?

To start, and to understand, you want to begin with MGS, the original. Since you have a PS2 and a Wii you could play either the PS1 version, or get the Twin Snakes which was on Gamecube.

The story's so convoluted, you should start from the beginning, then move through the series. MGS, MGS2: Sons of Liberty/Substance, MGS3: Snake Eater/Subsistence, MGS4: Guns of the Patriots. The real chronology is 3, 1, 2, 4.

Metal Gear Solid, then 2 then 3 then 4.

The 1st is on the PS1, 2nd and 3rd are for the ps2, 4th is ps3 exclusive.

For the 2nd, get the substance edition, for the 3rd game get the subsistence edition. There's extra junk in them.

You might be a BIT confused for missing the first 2 metal gear games (I don't remember what systems they're on), but the first game clears things up pretty well. Though personally, my interest in the series dropped pretty sharply in the third game. But lots of people love it, and they must all be pretty cheap. Hope this helps, and enjoy.

A surprisingly common misconception. The first game in the series was Metal Gear, followed by Metal Gear 2. They dealt with Big Bosses defection from FOXHOUND and America, and Snake rising to his position as super badass, and is actually quite relevant to the metal gear solid series storyline. However, I recommend skipping them as they frankly haven't aged well and are probably difficult to get your hands on. Also, the first Metal Gear Solid game explains what happened in those two games fairly well, you shouldn't be too lost.

Metal Gear, in my mind, is basically a playable movie. The story is what made the series playable for me. Don't expect groundbreaking gameplay or anything like that. Start with Metal Gear solid on the Playstation, then get Son's of Liberty (or Substance), then Snake Eater (or Subsistance), then, buy a PS3 and play Guns of the Patriots. The story makes it worth it 100% in my mind. I definitely recommend.

I'm kinda limited to gamestop, so I doubt I can find the PS1 version. Should I just look up the plot via You tube/Wiki and just move on to the PS2 entries?

Thanks for the help.

You don't. You run far the fuck away from Hideo Kojima's overly verbose monstrosity.

*sigh* Fine, fine...I feel like I'm passing sentence here, but so be it. The first game is indisputably the best, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a copy of MGS: Integral (the expanded edition, which also happened to be the PC port) without resorting to online purchase and/or emulation. I don't remember offhand if the Wii is backwards-compatible, but if it is you might also try to find Twin Snakes, the Gamecube remake of MGS. It's about as good as its spiritual predecessor, which is to say very.

Sons of Liberty for the PS2 is also a very decent game, even if it does have a few too many hints of the pseudo-philosophical verbal hemorrhaging Kojima was preparing to unleash in subsequent installments. If you can find it, get it.

And, er, stay away from MGS4. Please.

If you possibly can, get Twin Snakes for the Gamecube, maybe your gamestop doesn't have it but they can probably order it from another store, I know one of the stores near me has it. It's a graphically updated version of the first game, and new game mechanics. I also consider it the best of the series, slightly beating the second and massively better than the 3rd and 4th.

Glad you made this thread, I was wondering where to start too. It seems to be one of those series that you don't want to miss out on because everyone else knows about it and you don't want to be left out of the jokes or references.
I managed to find a copy of MSG for PS1 at a used book store of all places (and it was likely way cheaper than what I'd have paid at Gamestop).

I'm pretty sure MGS is available for download on the PSN store.

He said in the OP he couldn't get it online.
I'd try a local-owned used game store, or even used book store.

i started with metal gear solid, and there a few things from the previous games that you will be confused with, but not enough to ruin the plot. i think they still have the 3 pack at best buy

I say start and end with MGS. I played both the first and second and I was not happy with the second. My friend says the third was his favorite, but you are playing as the villain of Metal Gear (2? I can't remember) so that instantly lost all appeal to me. I watched a considerable portion of MGS4 and I have little desire to play it. IF MGS3 is as good as my friend says, then sure, go ahead and play that. MGS2 was alright, but you play as this pansy-ass kid and the only interesting thing that happens story wise in the whole game is post-credits. That's also what pissed me off about MGS3 being a prequel, because I wanted the story to continue after, not before.

Personally, I played MGS 2, then 3, then 4. Never played the first one, and never played the original Metal Gears. I still had a lot of fun with all of them, and was able to follow the plot fairly easily (well, as easily as you can follow the plot). They do a good job of referring to and explaining past events. If you can FIND it, play MGS 1 first, just so you can truly appreciate the nostalgia present in MGS 4.
