Well maybe instead of promoting every character we can think of to full fightin' status, why not be realistic and imagine up who will be assist trophies? I mean, it would be cool to play as Waluigi or Toad. But the majority of characters we can imagine will most likely be assist. A good way to solve the problem with character variations but to avoid clone characters would be different suits and graphical renderings for each character. So you can have regular Mario or a Tanooki version or Paper Mario or what have you. Maybe they could update the options like on a online rewards system.
Assist Trophy ideas:
Cataquacks from Super Mario Sunshine: Mostly just blue ones show up and toss the other players in the air. Occasionally a red one shows up instead and adds damage for each toss.
Dewey from Deweys Adventure: he could do 1 of 3 options at random. Like some of the Pokemon do. One would have him stay normal and roll around hitting enemies with his body as he causes wind gusts to blow people and items around. Or he could raise the temperature to hot, and become a stormcloud that electrocutes your enemies. Or number 3, he freezes the environment, making it slightly slippery, and he crystalizes and spins around wacking the fighters. If he does become a full fighter, then definitely have Don Hedron playable too.
Rambi from DKC: pretty simply runs around the stage and rams the fighters.
Dinosaur from BustAMove: Sets up his launcher under the stage and shoot marbles up at different angles for awhile.
Jigglypuff: should be an assit trophy. Would be more appreciated if so. Charges up by spinning fast, then rolls into players and knocking them off or falling asleep. If attacked, does his afterkill attack.
Chargin' Chuck: from Super Mario World. Does jusg what he does in the game. Runs from side to side headfirst into people. If he gets hit, he sits and pauses awhile while his head spins. Sometimes jumps up and does a clap attack.
Nights: from the sega games. Doesn't seem to have enough variety in moves, or even an ability to touch the ground, to be a full on character. Anyway he could just fly around the screen awhile emitting that diamond dust and causing portals to appear or something.
Bowser Jr - as much fun as it might be to speculate fighting as him, I can't imagine too many moves he's actually accumulated on his own that they could put in a new one, without becoming generic. One thing he could do as an assist is be like Dr. Wright's move is. But what Jr does instead, is use his paintbrush for a second, and from that he summons up an entire building or structure from Super Mario Sunshine. Scaled reasonably, of course. Like the shine gate or the Pianta statue, or sometimes just a palm tree. So it would always be random. But the other thing is he could be more precise and target people, unlike Dr. Wright. And the buildings would stay awhile, then eventually dissolve all of the sudden.
Shadow creatures from Twilight Princess: simply follows other fighters around and punches and lashes at them.
Mini Mario: given the moveset I have in mind, I picture him as a level specific assist. Only for a Mario Vs. Donkey Kong level. Set in a factory. Has spike pits and switching treadmills. Colored platforms and structures with corresponding buttons to strategically use to disappear or reappear. Also has wire platforms. These mini marios walk around, without attacking, and merely get in the way as you try to run or attack someone. They slow you down and will push you and items around. Occasionally they may do damage when they approach the wire platforms, by jumping and holding onto the wire and spinning flipping on it, then landing on the top wire. They can be hit once which makes them sit down, then they can either be hit again to break off into pieces, or picked up and thrown, where they will break into pieces upon impact.
Bullet Bill: barrage floods across the screen. Just like. Some of the old Pokemon assists used to. Can't remember the names but you probably remember.
Angry Birds: either an assist trophy that launches random birds from the game out of the corners. Or another idea is they could be an item. So you pick one up as it hatches or whatever, and you simply throw it and it immediately launches into its special move. While we're here it would actually be kind of neat to have a level inspired by their game. So many breakables and environmental items. Think about it!
King Boo - floats around with his tongue hanging out until he can swallow one of the other fighters by sucking them in with wind. His suction is about as powerful as King Dedede. Then they receive damage on the inside of him. Like with Gulpin. Then he merely pops, like when the other boos die.
Kamek: floats around casting injurious shapes at your enemies.
Miis: I know there's contorversy between people for and against their appearing in this, but one easy way (cause you know Nintendo's gonna include their most recent trends anyway. They had ROB on here) would have them be level specific. A Sports Resort flash tour level, and they merely appear all around doing the stuff from that game. Plane flying (like in the Corneria level), sword fighting, archery, tennis. They just come with the territory as it changes and get in the way. And all the ones you have on your system appear in those roles.
Main character from And Yet It Moves: not sure his name, but his appearance could be a camera angle shift one like Palkia in his stage. Or just a slowly turning level devoted to And Yet It moves.
Blob from De Blob: might be neat as a full fighter, but doesn't have a diverse enough move set. So all that being said, when he is summoned, he could either act like Piplup's assist, and merely stream off one way, hitting the character over as he goes. Or maybe he could just stick around the stage jumping around and body slamming into your opponants. Or maybe there could be a level devoted his games. Starts out white but he appears as an environmental attack, where he jumps around painting it, and you can get hit if you get in the way. Or else he's just a background feature. Arrives onscreen by jumping out of a manhole. It also has sections and pools of ink you can drown in. He could also activate transformation engines from de blob, that change the settings, causing buildings and palm trees and environmental structures to rise. Or maybe that could just be an item, that engine, that you throw and it makes one of those things pop up like Dr. Wright's assist. But one that stays around a bit. Like Bowser Jr.
Those are the only solid ones I can remember off the top of my head.
Another idea for assist trophies could be ones formatted to fit each legacy. So instead of the glass dome case they already have in the games, use a capsule item from whatever series the assistant character will be. A barrel for DK helpers, treasure chest with Triforce symbol for Zelda characters, computer monitor icon for Sonic related assists, and so on. Like they already do for Pokemon. Just a way to add variety on screen.
Mkay so Playable Fighter ideas:
Mario variations: Penguin, Tanooki, Invincible (just kidding), FLUDD (wish I was kidding), Dr., Paper (his on screen arrival could be to land as a plane and unfold), Regular, so on. Also makes different final smashes avilable. Also different graphical or colorization styles. Like 8-Bit or N64 polygon or paper and ink or something. Same goes for everyone.
King K. Rool - bowser sized fighter. Could have multiple outfits. His pirate form has good potential what with the musket and all, but you can't keep his original caped form out of the picture. That version could throw his crown for his side smash attack. It could work something like a boomerang but flies only to the side. His up smash could be a simple high jump like in DKC. Maybe his final smash could be to become his pirate self, and maybe invulnerable. Like Wario Man.
Petey Piranha - it could really be doable. Unless he winds up as a mere assist trophy. But to play as him, he could be scaled down a bit. Could actually flap his leaves to fly like pit, though he only gets 4. this would be necessary since he would be too heavy for his normal jump to be sufficient. His regular melee is his razor edged leaf fists, and his side melee is a headbutt. His down melee is a bodily cannonball attack, but when he's in the air it becomes a bellyflop. Easy to do a meteor smash with this, like Dedede. His grab move is to bite with his giant mouth, when he tosses you up, he also hits you with vines he summons quickly from the ground. His side tosses are done just like Wario's. His side smash though is to throw any one of his piranha relatives. Most of what he throws are simple red heads, that bounce only in one direction. Sometimes he can summon the little white ones that hop around on their own. These don't have as much impact, but hop around and follow you persistently, tacking away little damage with contact. His regular smash is a fireball he can charge up, that moves a little slowly but powerfully and constantly in one direction.
Ray Man - they have had a lot of success with some of their Wii specific games, that he could have a shot at appearing in the next one. More so than Master Chief, you gotta admit. Anyway, this guy can have regular punches, but when you do a smash melee, he charges up by swinging his fist, then throws it forward a good distance. Up smash would be a copter head move. A backup idea for that could be, instead of copter head, a move like Captain Falcon's. In this case he flings his hand up and it grapples, like Links chain. It either pulls him up to the person right away and does an attack, or simply catches the ledge. His arrival could be simply his body parts swirling onscreen one at a time. You can choose between his outfits too. Also have some cool levels with him. And music. And assist trophies, actually. His taunt could be the snicker he does at the end of each level in the first of his games.
Spyro - could have good headbutt moves. Maybe that could be his special side melee. His wings flap back, which allow him to lean forward more and ram someone. Also need a tailwhip in there somehow. Can flap n fly just like Pit. And his smash attack is to shoot a fireball. Occasionally an iceball, that either freezes the player for a second, or freezes a patch of ground when it hits it, making it slippery. Super smash could be lightning.
Pac Man - I know it seems I'm scraping the barrel here, and as much as it may seem they would probably only make him an assist, I can't help but see the potential for him as a full on fighter. Punching with his gloves as a melee, then as his special melee he opens up wide and bites at the enemies. His down smash would be his butt bounce from Pacman Worlds, which sends a very miniature shockwave along the ground, so it hits on both sides. His normal smash is to throw pellets and fruit in a harmful way. And his special smash makes a blue auora glow around him and he extends lightning from his fists. Not sure about his final smash. Still, he'd have cool levels of course. And we all know what his triumph jingle would be. Last but not least, he'd have to be voiced by Steve Carell. Don't panic, Pacman would have to be sfx all the way.
Sly Cooper - nobody whine at me; I already know for starters that Sony would never let themselves lose this guy to Nintendo, even if just to share him. That being said, out of a lot of the characters out there, he and his legacy would be great to add to SSB. His primary attack is his cane. Side smash move is his Knockout Dive. Up smash works like Ike's does and can grapple him up. Also his grab could pull someone in, and if the player times the button press just right, he can steal the other fighters weapon they are holding. Would have to be tricky to do so it doesn't cheaply rob you every second. His screen arrival could be him hopping up from the bottom of the screen and crouching on the edge looking from side to side, as if it were a rooftop, or him coming down from up top using his parachute, or a sharp snap and puff of dark purple smoke that clears in the wind to show that he's suddenly appeared now. Or else that smoke bomb move could be his down smash that works like Metaknights warp move, but visually like Sheiks up teleportation move. If he uses it but stays in place instead, he could shrug at the camera for a second like he does when he's about to fall to his death in the games. If they have a better moveset that doesn't include that, it should at least be one of his taunts. Would also be great to get some of their locations to fight at too. Bently and Murray would more likely be assist trophies at first.
Quote - from cave story. Let's face it, that game is going to get some mention in the next SSB. Even if only as a trophy. But if they do include this guy in there, and not just as an assist which almost seems more likely, they'd have some good weapons to choose for him. Perhaps ordinary fireball could be his smash attack. Or the bubbler, summoning swift bubble attacks. Anyway, maybe this could be a special smash, or final smash, or just an assist weapon for anyone, but that knife that summons King's soul which flies forward and beats someone up that gets caught in it. Sort of like Link's does or something.
Banjo Kazooie - seems unlikely, but his characters got potential moves and all. Maybe Kazooie is his own player, could be an idea, but my thoughts have him in the backpack like usual. his normal melee is his claws, while his special side melee is Kazooie using Ratatat Rap at someone. Their up smash could be the spring shock jump. Either the pad appears for a second, like Game And Watch's trampoline, or else they just lunge upward. But Kazooie's beak points straight up for the attack and his wings open at either side around Banjo, then they jump. When it comes to jumping, they get one or two extra flaps, maybe. His down smash is the forward roll, while his special side smash is Kazooie launching an egg. His regular side smash is the golden wrench. They hit people with it. Yep. Perhaps they could have a Spiral Mountain level, that occasionally spins, while the characters and items remain in the places. Depending on which way it goes, it lowers or raises what is standing on it. Gradually, of course.
Commander Keen: pretty deservable for a DOS game. A lot of the players I list may not be likely to be included, obviously. But it shouldn't stop us from being creative about what they could do. Regular smash is his neural stunner. Like Zero Suit Samus, he can charge it up to incapacitate someone awhile, with stars around their head. Super smash move is the flower bomb. Just explodes when tossed and forms a small mushroom cloud. Up smash is pogostick. Works like Dededes jump.
Crash Bandicoot - His melee could be a standing karate stance side kick. Karate palm followup. Final Smash is his Mask. He runs around invincible with it. Another idea is he could do like they did in Mind Over Mutant, and take one over to start fighting. Regular smash is his tornado move. His up smash could be like Sonic, but instead of a spring, it's a bouncy box. If it stays, it can be broken to get an item. Also would have good level environments at his disposal.
Earthworm Jim - regular smash is his blaster, which can chip away damage rapidly at close contact or be charged and used to do more damage from farther. Lashes his head like a whip. Can use this to grapple. Up smash is a copter head. Not sure about his final smash. Wouldn't be the Pocket Rocket though. Wouldn't want to rip off Olimar. Maybe his rocket is his arrival animation instead. Would be cool to have Heck as a level. Lava under the stage, and a spinning gem platform that dips into it. Psycrow could either be another character or perhaps an assist.
Commander Video - good visual addition. Has a varying array of blast abilities from Fate, and has a dash move like Fox, where he has a rainbow trail run through him and he launches forward. Can also hover, like Princess Peach, but his visual style of that could also be like on Fate, where you can see his line trail, and can see how far he can go. Or maybe that would cheapen it a bit. Would be great to get assists from his games of course.
Alien Hominid - hey its possible. Besides, it would be cool to have Behemoth design some levels and other visual stuff. Not much to say, just he's got his blaster, has decent melees, and can throw grenades. It might sound generic to you, but remember to consider what this would look like if he were to be hopping around blasting junk at Bowser.
Super Meat Boy - nothing much to say, just that it would be nice to add him into the mix visually gappy grin and all. Maybe a giga version of him could be him with a wifebeater on, and his central body becomes a steak and you can see the Tbone of it at the top, and he has linked sausages for arms. Okay I shouldn't force too many ideas here. His regular version would have pretty generic moves I'll admit. But one move could be like Fox's dash, but he slides forward, also leaving behind a trail of meat players can slip on, for a moment. the only reason they haven't put him on the Wii yet is because they didn't have room for the full game on the WiiWare, and they didn't have enough financial time to release it as a physical game either.
Travis Touchdown - he has so many katana varieties, perhaps his down smash could switch between them. Unfortunately I don't know everything about this guy so my suggestions are limited.
Dr. Robotnik - it really seems possible. I can already see his victory pose now. He's another one I get the jist of, but can't remember enough to give you detailed move ideas. Obviously a lot of robotics. Maybe his final smash is a giant robot suit he controls for awhile. But from the backdrop, so he faces the screen. Like that claw on the Halberd in Brawl. At the end of it, it falls apart naturally and turns into some hopping bunnies and frogs and birds like in the original.
Prince Of Persia - Has a lot of chops to bring to the fight, but I'll admit I don't know much about him either. At least has a costume change in him!
