More people will have heard of Warframe today, because TotalBiscuit made a video of it.
I know I did.

When he mentioned that it was made by the same folks who made Dark Sector, my interest perked up. Dark Sector was a game I really enjoyed, especially the artstyle of the technocyte virus, so imagine my surprise and glee when the characters in this new game looked extremely similar!

Why, I signed up for the beta and downloaded the game with a modicum of speed I tell you what!

After playing a game largely solo, I discovered it's quite difficult to solo anything, and that when the announcer assures you that nobody has detected you, that's code for everything has detected you.

My one problem so far is that if the microtransaction model remains the same as it currently is, it's going to be extremely bloody expensive to play seriously. You're essentially buying respawns with real money.

But it's looking interesting so far, and I wondered if anyone else was faffing about in this game.

Ya I practically just got it, and honestly after about two hours in it already feels repetitive.
The quickest description I can give people is ME3 combat with twice the complexity and just as exciting/dull.

Sadly they use the same sterile gray glossy environment bollocks with shinny bits everyone else is doing, and while they try to make an appearance of sci-fi you yet again wield the same old rifle/pistol/shotgun from every other non imaginative shooter.
But surprisingly mobility is way faster and smoother then any 3rd person shooter in the last decade(apart from Vanquish), and there is actual melee combat not just a "I win" button... again something very surprising in this generation.
So mechanically it is just as functional as anything else and obviously tailored to the modern tastes which I do not have.

But beyond the basic mechanics they haven't got much more to lean on, sofar they only have PVE co-op maps and these are don't seem to be designed it's all just sort of random, and the adversaries also aren't set up for a specific challenge they seem to be thrown in randomly and swarm you until the challenge is done... that really doesn't offer much of a payoff, besting someones intelligent design feels very cool, besting some dice is just silly.

Again that is just me being spoiled by good design, I know there is a lot of people who crave the grind in which case this is a must have game for you.

I saw the video and it does look pretty cool, but not something I'm interested in right now to many games in my to do list

I largely agree, and just hope that the 'beta is beta' adage holds true.

Something they seem to have recently added, though, is a 'bonus spin' for logging in, I assume once per day. I got extra pistol rep, and apparently these bonuses increase with successive logins. Which is interesting.

-----

I'd love it if the game remembered my bloody resolution settings, too.

The "beta is beta" thing does appear to be holding true owing to the fact that the developers have not only addressed the issues with the current paid model, particularly where "pro"ing your Warframe is concerned, and have implied a pretty substantial desire to change it, but also that they're currently working on new environments, seeing as the whole space ship thing wears thin pretty fast.

It's worth considering that it is still in very early beta, mid/late October I believe it started, so there's most likely still a lot more to come. What I am extremely impressed with however is how well optimised the game appears to be, seems like it can run on a great deal of configurations, even on some pretty damn dated hardware with good visuals and stable FPS from what I've heard.
It's a cool little game with a great deal of potential, potential that will likely be fulfilled from what I've seen and heard of developer interaction with the community forum.

Also, on the note of the revives, they're fully replenished every day for free anyway, you never have to buy them, so if you play intelligently carefully, you shouldn't really need all 4 anyway.

It's different, I've enjoyed playing it so far, wouldn't mind some sort of PvP arena mind you, maybe 4v4 squad play or something to that effect.

Yes, I noticed this when I logged in today. That's alright then.

I'm still waiting for the technocyte glaive to be added as a melee weapon, then it will be Dark Sector.

Seriously, look at the image in the opening post, then look at this:

Well there appears to be a good number of different melee weapons currently available, the in game shop isn't the definitive place to get all equipment, some of it's only obtained through blueprints etc gotten on field, so it might already be there!

Force did a [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fst79XQdfMQ] couple of videos too [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oLnBiBmo48]. Yeah I saw it this morning and it looks pretty cool I must say.

The thing I'll be looking out for mainly is the business model. With the whole instance-only thing it could turn out a bit like DDO, which is both good and bad in equal proportions. The way DDO worked (mainly) is by selling adventure packs, in other words by giving a big bulk of game away for free and then selling off little expansions every so often. It's a good model because it forces the devs into constantly releasing new content to create revenue (and the players are free to skip anything they don't want, which offers an incentive towards good content). If they go down that kind of route then that should hopefully ease some of the repetitiveness fears, as they would then have a budget to create new assets with each release. On the flip side of it, that whole "Upgrade to Pro" thing reminds me a lot of the Champion status in DDO, which is as close to pay-to-win as I've seen.

Gameplay looks good though. Obviously it's a lot like Mass Effect, minus the cover. I never did get ME3 in the end (lolwillpowerlol) but I remember my brother playing it and raving about the multiplayer. When he showed it to me I remember I asked him "do you think someone should make a full game based on this?" and he said something like "yeah?" in that tone that says "of course, why would you even ask?". So it sounds like a winner mechanically.

it looks alot like what "dark sector" was going to be like, all science fictiony, before they changed it to be more like gears of war. but it looks good and the arts style maybe the reason to check it out.

here the old dark sector trailer

SO they pushed out a new build for the beta. Gone is the Pay-to-Win 'Pro' system that essentially forced you into using real money to unlock all your character's upgrade slots!
Instead, you now use an item to do it. Which you can only buy with real money currency. Or craft in the forge, but Gods alone know how lucky you'd have to be to get the blueprints to do so.

But at least it's an option, and it'll take a while to level up to the point where you could even use those extra slots anyway.
Things are looking up!

Apparently they reskinned the Ember warframe, tough I personally can't tell a difference and haven't seen anyone playing as her yet either.

Also, I discovered that one can sell their unused, useless and unwanted mods for game currency, which helped me get the cash needed to purchase a semi-automatic rifle. Very nice.
And I found a schematic for some sort of ceramic katana or something. Takes twelve hours to make and I have no idea if it's better than the starting sword. Time and level-ups will tell!

So, that sword I made in the Foundry.
It's considerably more powerful than the starter weapon. Success!

Also I found my first mod for the character itself, rather than an endless stream of useless shotgun weapon mods. Still can't use it of course, because I'm only rank 8 and the mod requires rank 10, and it's not even all that interesting - It's only an armour increase, which one assumes only comes into play once the energy shields are gone, and I have boosted energy shields.

Alas.

So I gave it a try. I'm not actually all that impressed :/

The videos looked really good, but for some reason I didn't like it once I started playing. I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but it feels like it's missing a cover mechanic. Like all the mobs are using cover, but you can't. As soon as timers started appearing it felt more frustrating than fun. Not really my thing.

Been playing this game quite a bit for a few weeks now. I think the problem is that the announcers little sound clips can't be interrupted. In other words, the game checks whether you've been detected and, if you haven't, starts playing that long ass announcement. If you get detected at any point after the check, the announcement still plays in full. Needs to be possible to cut that one off if condition changes.

Aside from that, I'm having quite a bit of fun with it. Tried most of the frames, many of the weapons and finished most missions. Boss grinding for blueprints is hell, though. I've been playing at least 3 Jackal runs a day for 12 days and still do not have the Rhino helmet. Oh, well. MMO's, you know?

Do love the combat, movement and aesthetics of the game, though.

Larf... When he was starting to point out the game gets samey after a while, my first thought was, "Oh Christ, not the Global Agenda problem again". Thirty seconds later he compares Warframe to Global Agenda. xD

So, once again we have a multiplayer game that would probably be better off being a singleplayer game. Too bad. :\

I'm not sure if you noticed, because it isn't explained anywhere, but you're meant to be jumping and sliding and maybe even wallrunning around the place to avoid incoming fire.
Shame the controls for running and crouching are Shift and CTRL by default. Try running forwards and springing into a slide with those controls. Even worse when you're trying to shoot at the same time, so I largely don't bother.

I agree with the timers though, even if the only ones I remember seeing are when someone's reached the extraction point and everyone else is given a minute to reach the area before the mission ends.
I'm not sure if anyone who doesn't reach the end loses out on anything, because I'm not that bad. :p

You've either been farming a SHITLOAD of credits, or you dropped a fuck-tonne of real money into the game to get the frames, and the bloody inventory space to hold them.

Ugh, I hate the aethstetic.

The whole organic look can be cool, but they just make it look like shit somehow.
I think the problem with that is that to get the game running on, well, old-ass rigs like mine, the textures aren't of a particularly high definition.
Hopefully, those will come later.

Not a fuck-tonne, no. I bought the second level Founders package for 47 euro. Or was it 37? Actually not sure anymore. That got me enough platinum to buy Loki, Volt and all 3 female frames plus 6 Frame slots.

As for credits, I've found that selling mods I don't need keeps me at about 100-200k at all times; even when I'm building Rhino parts in the foundry. Also, the Excalibur Prime I got with the Founders package allowed me to sell my original Excalibur, which was worth 75k or so.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I still have about 400 Plat and I can't even figure out what to spend it on. Not sure what people who bought the more expensive Founders packages are doing with their plat. You run out of stuff to buy after a while.
