Warhammer 40,000 is a great game (even though I haven't played it much) but the lack of a plot really gets to me. It has one of the best dystopian future settings that I know of but the lack of an ending to the plot takes away from that in my opinion. My question is, should Warhammer 40,000's plot have a conclusion, such as who won the war (maybe multiple endings?)? The argument against this is that the game would seem kinda 'dead,' and that it would be hard to have a conclusion that wouldn't irritate the players (since every army has its supporters). But I want to know if the Necrons awaken the C'tan on Mars, or if the Harlequins kill Slannesh, or if the Emporer ever gets out of the Golden Throne, or if the Tyranids consume the entire galaxy.
Does anyone else feel this way, or have another side to the argument?

That would essentially kill the game. Only one faction can win the war. And if they make it so that one faction wins, the fans of every other faction will be incredibly pissed off.

And aren't there a large number of Warhammer 40K books? I'm pretty sure there are many plots within the WH40k universe.

It's a setting, not a story.
There are individual stories within the setting and they all have conclusions. What your asking is like asking 'Who won England?'.

There is no overreaching plot, it's all just history, much like in real life. Could you imagine Earth where the 'USA Faction' or the 'UK Faction' or whatever 'wins'? Whatever that would mean? No, I'm guessing not. And the same applies to 40k. It's just history, created for the franchise. You can't have 'winners' or 'losers', unless you killed off all other races completely, and I doubt Games Workshop or the Black Library really advocate in-game genocide...

Why would it have an ending? That would be like a video game saying "and they all lived happily ever after, so um.. your not needed here"

The timeline also seems to be stuck at 999.M41. The Imperium is on the very brink of collapse, Abbaddon has taken Cadia (I believe), the Void Dragon is about to wake up on Mars, and a new huge Tyranid Hive fleet is coming, which the Tau Empire has to deal with in addition to a major WAAAGH! fighting the Farsight Enclaves.

I even one year passes in the timeline as it stands now, then the name of the game will have to change (Warhammer 41,000), Chaos will launch an attack on Terra itself, the Void Dragon will wake up, the next Hive Fleet will arrive, etc.

Games Workshop has made the situation so desparate for the Imperium that they can't afford to continue the timeline. The Imperium looks set to fall. And since the Imperium is the most popular faction by far, they will potentially lose a huge portion of their fan base (I'm for the Tau, so I don't care).

It does have a plot, but its one of those open ended ones that evolves over time (and is influenced sometimes by the fans) But as for a set ending? I dont see that ending well... (ironically enough) Warhammer (and 40K) is all about fantasy and creativity. A "beginning to end" solid storyline would only stifle that. Well I guess thats my little speech for the day.

I think Abbaddon got kicked out of Cadia but more or less because he didn't feel that the time was right to take over the world.

Did anybody even care about them?
No not really.. just like my beloved Dark Eldar who are no longer in stores and only have a 2nd Ed. codex. But that's fine with me 2+ invulnerable save.

I do love the 40k Universe. Though everything is based on various levels of being Dark, as well as everyone being the Most Powerful Psyker. Including the Necrons, who have no Psykers because they have Psyker like things that are more powerful than the most powerful psykers, which can only be defeated by the most powerful of psykers. Seriously though, I do like the 40k Universe; our best DnD Campaign ever took place there.

Orcs have already won, the only objective they ever had was: a good fight. So yea, they win :D

As for concluding the main plot line, no, further it? sure, but dont end, not that they ever will, GW makes to much money of it :p But i personally dont want all the novels to streaming in so yea :p
